AWS Compute Optimizer recommendations do not change resources by themselves. Its separate Automation feature can apply only certain recommended actions—currently including actions for unattached EBS volumes and EBS volume types—either after a user reviews and confirms them or through scheduled rules. Whether anything changes depends on eligibility, account authorization, and the way Automation is configured.
What a Compute Optimizer recommendation means
AWS Compute Optimizer analyzes configuration and utilization metrics for supported AWS resources and produces recommendations intended to help improve cost and performance. A recommendation is advice, not evidence that AWS has changed the resource. The distinction is important: a recommendation must be eligible for an available action, and that action must actually be applied before the resource changes.
Coverage is conditional. Compute Optimizer supports categories including EC2 instances, Auto Scaling groups, EBS volumes, Lambda functions, ECS services on Fargate, commercial software licenses, Aurora and RDS databases, NAT Gateway, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, MemoryDB, DocumentDB, WorkSpaces, and SageMaker. Each resource must meet its type-specific requirements and provide enough metric data. For example, AWS says EC2 instances and Auto Scaling groups generally need at least 30 hours of CloudWatch metrics in the past 14 days to receive recommendations; this is a service requirement, not a guarantee of a recommendation or savings. Which actions Automation can apply
Compute Optimizer Automation is a separate feature, not a switch that executes every recommendation. AWS currently documents these recommended action types for Automation:

- Create a snapshot of an unattached EBS volume and delete that volume.
- Upgrade an EBS volume type.
These action types should not be taken as evidence that Automation can implement recommendations for every supported service or resource. A recommendation for another resource type may still require the operator to make and carry out a decision separately. Two ways to apply eligible actions

The direct-application limit is a batch size, not a limit on the total number of recommendations an account can receive. To apply a batch, follow AWS’s Apply recommended actions instructions. For recurring execution, review Automation rules and verify the targeting criteria and schedule before enabling a rule.

What enabling Automation authorizes
Enabling Automation authorizes Compute Optimizer to manage resources in the account. For documented EBS actions, that can include creating snapshots, deleting EBS volumes, and modifying EBS volumes. Treat this as operational permission, not merely permission to display advice. Review the scope of access and the resources a rule could match before enabling it. AWS explains the setup in Enabling Automation.
What to review before acting on EC2 recommendations
For EC2 instance-type recommendations, AWS says the decision to act remains with the user. The recommendations draw on historical usage, which may not represent upcoming demand or changed workload needs. AWS advises evaluating future requirements, compatibility, and performance risk, and testing workloads before and after a change. Those cautions are specific to EC2 instance recommendations; do not assume every action type has identical risks or recovery behavior. See Get EC2 instance recommendations from Compute Optimizer.

How to verify an automated change
- Check eligibility: Confirm that the resource meets the relevant requirements and that the recommendation maps to an action Automation supports.
- Check the execution path: For direct application, inspect the selected actions and confirm them. For a rule, verify its Region, resource-tag criteria, and schedule.
- Confirm the result: Track Automation events and inspect the affected resource to establish whether the action ran and what changed.
- Use recovery controls carefully: Compute Optimizer documents the ability to reverse actions. Check the recovery behavior for the specific action before relying on it; rollback should not be assumed to be identical for every recommendation.
AWS’s Automation guidance describes tracking events and reversing actions. An action being recommended, selected, or matched by a rule is not by itself proof that it completed successfully.
