1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can classify raw reviews as positive or negative with a scikit-learn-style pipeline that cleans the text, sends it to a language model, and evaluates predictions on held-out examples. In Scikit-LLM’s zero-shot workflow, fit registers the candidate labels; it does not train the model’s weights. The endpoint and model in the example are implementation choices, not guaranteed current services.
How the pipeline works
The workflow combines familiar scikit-learn interfaces with model-hosted text classification. A preprocessing step normalizes review text, then ZeroShotGPTClassifier predicts one of the candidate sentiment labels. The pipeline is evaluated against labels that were not used in its fit call.
- Install Scikit-LLM and configure credentials for the model provider you intend to use.
- Load labeled review text and split it into training and test sets.
- Clean the text with a scikit-learn transformer.
- Fit the pipeline on training text and labels, then predict labels for the test text.
- Review per-class metrics and inspect incorrect predictions.
Install Scikit-LLM and configure a model endpoint
The title-matched tutorial configures Scikit-LLM with a Groq-compatible URL and an API key. Treat its endpoint and model name as examples: verify that both are available and compatible when you implement the pipeline. The Scikit-LLM quick start also documents an OpenAI-key setup path.
Before sending review text to a hosted model, check the provider’s current pricing, quotas, data-handling terms, and model availability. These details are provider- and time-dependent; the cited setup examples do not establish them.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Load and split labeled reviews
The tutorial uses an IMDb movie-review CSV described as containing about 50,000 examples, but samples 500 for its demonstration. It uses positive and negative labels, a fixed random seed, and an 80/20 train-test split. That small demonstration is useful for showing the mechanics, not for establishing expected production performance.
Adapt the loading code to your data source and confirm that each review has the correct label. Keep the test set separate until evaluation; otherwise, the reported metrics can overstate how well the workflow handles unseen reviews.

Clean text without removing sentiment
The tutorial’s cleaner removes HTML tags, trims leading and trailing whitespace, and collapses repeated whitespace. It uses a scikit-learn FunctionTransformer, so the transformation can sit directly in the pipeline and be applied consistently at prediction time.
Text cleanup is source-specific. Validate changes against representative reviews before removing punctuation, emojis, negation words, or other tokens that may carry sentiment. A transformation that makes text tidier can also erase useful meaning.

Build and run the Scikit-LLM pipeline
Place the cleaner and ZeroShotGPTClassifier in a scikit-learn Pipeline. Supply clear candidate labels such as positive and negative; use neutral as well if your task genuinely includes that category. The Scikit-LLM documentation demonstrates these sentiment labels and describes classification without labeled training examples in its versioned package documentation.
- Create the text-cleaning transformer and the zero-shot classifier, then add them to a pipeline in that order.
- Call
fitwith the training review texts and their labels. - Call
predictwith the held-out review texts and collect the predicted labels.
Here, fit prepares the estimator by registering the candidate labels. It does not update language-model weights, as it would in a conventional supervised training workflow. Classification still depends on the model endpoint’s behavior and the inputs it receives.

Evaluate predictions and inspect errors
Use a classification report to examine precision, recall, F1, and support for each class, alongside overall accuracy. Aggregate accuracy alone can hide poor performance on a less common class. Inspect misclassified reviews too: errors can reveal ambiguous labels, preprocessing damage, or cases the candidate-label descriptions do not handle well.
In the tutorial’s displayed run, the 100-example test set contains 60 negative and 40 positive reviews. It reports precision of 0.95 for each class, recall of 0.97 for negative and 0.93 for positive, and overall accuracy of 0.95. These are outputs reported by MachineLearningMastery.com’s June 16, 2026 tutorial, not independently reproduced results or a performance guarantee. They depend on the sampled data and split, model, endpoint, and prompt behavior.

Validate predicted labels as part of error analysis. Scikit-LLM’s documentation warns that when a model response does not contain a valid candidate label, the library may choose one randomly according to label frequencies. A plausible-looking output therefore is not, by itself, proof that the model returned a valid label.
When to fine-tune instead
Zero-shot classification avoids fitting model weights on your labeled reviews, but it still relies on a hosted model in the demonstrated setup. If your task needs domain-specific behavior or a model trained on your own examples, a separate option is to fine-tune a sequence classifier with Hugging Face Transformers. Its text-classification guide covers tokenization with truncation, batched preprocessing, dynamic padding, explicit label mappings, accuracy evaluation, model training, and sentiment-pipeline inference.
These are distinct workflows, and the cited material provides no controlled head-to-head result. Choose by testing both approaches on the same representative holdout set and weighing:
Quick Recap
- Labeling and training effort: zero-shot classification can use candidate labels without labeled examples for fitting; fine-tuning requires a labeled dataset and a training workflow.
- Endpoint dependence and operating cost: the demonstrated Scikit-LLM setup calls a hosted endpoint. Check provider terms and costs; compare them with the resources and operating costs of your chosen fine-tuning and inference setup.
- Domain-specific behavior: fine-tuning gives you a way to train on domain examples, while zero-shot predictions depend on the model’s interpretation of the text and labels.
- Measured performance: compare per-class metrics and error patterns on the same held-out reviews rather than assuming one method is universally more accurate or faster.
