To check storage on a MacBook Air, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage on macOS Ventura 13 or later. On earlier macOS versions, use Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. Review the categories, remove or move files you recognize, empty Bin or Trash if you deleted anything, then return to Storage to check the updated figures.
Open the MacBook Air storage view
- macOS Ventura 13 or later: Choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.
- Earlier macOS versions: Choose Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage.
The Storage view groups disk use into categories and may show controls for finding or managing content. Its figures update as you take cleanup steps; allow it time to refresh before judging the result. Apple’s storage guidance covers the available view and recommendations.
Choose what to remove or move
Use the categories to locate files you recognize and no longer need. Large documents and downloads, media, unused apps, and old device backups are common places to review. Depending on the macOS version and what is stored on the Mac, the view may offer More Info controls or recommendations. Apple also identifies Mail junk and deleted items as possible cleanup targets.
- Delete only what you no longer need. Review files before removing them, especially if their names or purpose are unclear.
- Empty Bin or Trash when appropriate. Moving an item there does not immediately free the disk space. Apple explains that the space remains occupied until Bin is emptied; some macOS versions call it Trash. See Apple’s instructions for finding and deleting files.
- Move large files you want to keep. An external storage drive can hold large media files or Photos and iMovie libraries while reducing the space they use on the Mac. Confirm that the drive and your intended workflow suit your needs; no particular drive model or performance is established here.
Use storage recommendations with the right expectations
macOS may offer options to optimize storage by keeping some content in iCloud or removing items that can be downloaded or retrieved again. These options affect what remains stored locally; iCloud capacity is separate from the Mac’s built-in storage and depends on your iCloud plan. Apple describes the options in its storage recommendations.

#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- iCloud storage: Desktop and Documents files, photos, videos, messages, and attachments may be stored in iCloud to reduce local use. Availability of cloud space depends on your plan, and access to cloud-stored content may require an internet connection.
- Apple TV and Mail: Recommendations may remove watched Apple TV content and keep only recent Mail attachments on the Mac when space is needed. Check the specific option before enabling it so you understand what will remain local.
- Automatic Bin cleanup: A recommendation can automatically erase Bin or Trash items that have been there for more than 30 days. This is a product setting, not a promise that every deleted file is recoverable until then.
Understand System Data and available space
System Data—called Other in some macOS versions—is a broad category, not a single folder to empty. It can include logs, caches, virtual-memory and temporary files, fonts, app support files, plug-ins, and other runtime resources. Apple says macOS manages this content and that the category changes with the Mac’s current state. Avoid manually deleting unfamiliar system files. Apple’s explanation of storage categories provides more detail.
The displayed figures may not add up in the way you expect because available storage can include purgeable caches, while those same caches may also be counted as used. Apple distinguishes available space from free storage; the numbers are not necessarily a simple set of non-overlapping categories. Read Apple’s explanation of free and available storage.

- Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Free space temporarily with safe mode
If you need room for a short-term task such as installing a macOS update, Apple says starting in safe mode may clear certain caches and could free enough space. Those caches are recreated as needed, so this is temporary assistance rather than a general cleanup method. Do not use it as a reason to remove system files manually. Follow Apple’s instructions for starting your Mac in safe mode.
