To check whether your PC meets a game’s GPU requirements, find the exact graphics adapter installed in Windows, then compare its full model name and video memory with the game publisher’s current requirements. Check whether the target is minimum or recommended and note any stated resolution, frame rate, or graphics preset. The result is a compatibility and performance estimate—not a guaranteed frame rate.
1. Find your GPU model in Windows
- Open Start, search for Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down every complete model name shown, including its manufacturer and any suffix or memory designation. Microsoft documents this route in its GPU identification guidance.
If more than one adapter appears, your PC may have integrated graphics as well as a separate, more powerful GPU. Laptops can switch between them depending on the workload, so do not assume the first listed adapter is the one a game will use. Microsoft explains the difference between integrated and discrete GPUs in its GPU overview.
2. Find the requirements for the exact game
Look up the game on the developer’s or publisher’s support site, or on the official store page for the PC edition you own. Requirements can vary by edition and may change after updates. Microsoft advises checking the developer’s site for the GPU requirements of a specific game.
Read both the minimum and recommended specifications, and capture more than the GPU name. A useful comparison includes:

- Exact GPU model: Match the full designation, not just the family name. Models with similar names can sit in different performance tiers.
- Form factor: Compare desktop cards with desktop cards and laptop GPUs with laptop GPUs. A laptop GPU bearing a familiar model name may perform differently from its desktop counterpart.
- Dedicated video memory (VRAM): Check whether the game lists a minimum amount and whether your GPU has it.
- Performance target: Note any resolution, frame-rate target, or graphics preset attached to the requirement.
- Other compatibility requirements: Check the specified Windows version and graphics API, such as DirectX, separately from raw GPU performance.
3. Understand what “minimum” and “recommended” mean
Minimum and recommended are different targets, not universal promises about how a game will look or run. A publisher may tie a listed GPU to a particular resolution, frame rate, and preset. Compare against the target you actually want, rather than treating “recommended” as a guarantee at every setting.
For example, Square Enix’s published requirements for a PC Steam game pair its minimum GPUs—Radeon RX 460 and GeForce GTX 750—with a stated target of 60 FPS at 1280×720 on Low and 2 GB of VRAM. Its recommended line lists Radeon RX 470, Intel Arc A750, and GeForce GTX 1060 6GB alongside a 60 FPS target at 1920×1080 on Highest. These are that game’s stated targets, not a general ranking of those cards for every title. See the Square Enix specifications.

Requirements can also include title-specific warnings. Capcom’s Steam FAQ says operation is not guaranteed with onboard graphics or devices that share system memory as VRAM. It also warns that mobile GPUs meeting its listed requirements may still perform substantially worse than desktop GPUs, and notes that demanding scenes can reduce performance. Treat those caveats as applying to the games covered by that FAQ, not as a blanket statement about all games.
4. Check DirectX and the rest of the PC
A GPU comparison alone does not establish that the whole PC meets a game’s requirements. Check the CPU, system memory, supported Windows version, storage, and graphics API listed on the game’s official page.

- Open Start, search for
dxdiag, and launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. - On the System tab, find the installed DirectX version.
Microsoft explains that DxDiag reports information about DirectX components and installed drivers in its DirectX instructions; its page on checking your DirectX version gives the corresponding steps. Having a required DirectX version is a compatibility check, not proof that the GPU can deliver a desired frame rate. Windows 11’s general DirectX 12 requirement, for example, is an operating-system requirement—not a pass mark for every game.

Use an online GPU hierarchy or benchmark only as a rough comparison when the publisher does not name your exact model. The publisher’s requirements should remain the anchor: a chart that does not explain its data, test conditions, or whether it compares laptop and desktop parts cannot establish a reliable equivalent.

Look for independent results for the same game, GPU form factor, resolution, and settings you plan to use. Consider VRAM as well as general GPU performance; a larger VRAM figure by itself does not prove that one card is faster or equivalent. Drivers, game settings, GPU generation, and laptop power limits can also affect results.

6. Decide what to do with the comparison
- Your GPU meets the stated target: Treat this as a reasonable sign that it is in the intended tier, not a guarantee of smooth performance in every scene or at every setting.
- Your GPU falls below the minimum or lacks required VRAM: Expect a greater risk of poor performance or incompatibility. Lower settings may help in some cases, but the specification alone cannot predict the result.
- You are considering an upgrade: First confirm that your specific computer supports one. Desktop discrete GPUs are separate cards; laptop graphics may be integrated or otherwise constrained by the laptop’s design. The GPU maker’s name or a game’s requirement is not enough to establish physical, power, or system compatibility. Microsoft’s GPU overview describes these configuration differences.
Quick comparison checklist
- Did you record the full model name of the GPU, or all adapters if Windows lists more than one?
- Are you comparing the right form factor: desktop GPU to desktop GPU, or laptop GPU to laptop GPU?
- Does the game’s official page list a VRAM requirement?
- Are you comparing against the minimum or recommended target you actually need, including any resolution, FPS, and preset?
- Do the PC’s CPU, memory, Windows version, storage, and DirectX requirements also match?
