Find these controls in Apple menu > System Settings > Battery on supported macOS versions. Optimized Battery Charging and Charge Limit serve a different purpose: they help manage long-term battery aging rather than add runtime to the current charge.
Which MacBook Air settings can extend runtime?
Turn on Low Power Mode when you need to conserve energy
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery, then select Low Power Mode. Apple says Low Power Mode reduces energy use to increase battery life. In macOS Ventura or later, Energy Mode controls can be chosen separately for battery use and power-adapter use. The exact options vary by Mac and macOS version. Lower display brightness to a comfortable level
Reducing screen brightness is a direct conservation step recommended in Apple’s MacBook Air guide. Set it as low as remains comfortable for your work; there is no universal brightness level that fits every room or task.
Review recent Battery history
In System Settings > Battery, Battery history can show battery level and screen-on usage for the last 24 hours, plus energy usage and screen-on usage for the last 10 days. Look for recurring patterns—such as high use during particular work sessions—rather than treating the charts as a guaranteed diagnosis of every drain. Close unused apps and disconnect idle accessories
Quit apps you are not using and disconnect peripherals that are not needed. Apple lists both as basic ways to conserve power. The benefit depends on what is running or connected, so these steps do not imply a fixed amount of extra runtime.
Which charging settings help battery lifespan instead?
Keep Optimized Battery Charging enabled
Optimized Battery Charging learns your charging routine. When it predicts that the Mac will remain plugged in for an extended period, it may delay charging beyond 80%, then aims to finish charging before you are likely to unplug it. Apple describes this feature as helping reduce battery aging; it is not a way to add hours to the current charge. The behavior and settings are covered in the MacBook Air battery guide.

Consider Charge Limit if your Mac supports it
Apple’s April 2026 guidance says Charge Limit requires an Apple silicon Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later. It lets you choose a limit from 80% to 100%. This lifespan-oriented setting may suit people who keep their Mac connected to power often; setting a lower limit does not increase the runtime available from a full charge. - Need more time before your next charge? Use Low Power Mode, lower brightness, and review Battery history for usage patterns.
- Often work plugged in? Optimized Battery Charging—and Charge Limit if your Mac meets Apple’s requirements—are intended to support battery lifespan.
- Can’t find a setting? Apple’s menu options vary by model and macOS version. Check the documentation for your Mac rather than assuming every MacBook Air has identical controls.
Apple’s guidance does not specify a guaranteed percentage or number of hours gained from these changes. Actual runtime depends on the Mac and how it is being used.
