To install an iOS developer beta the supported, ordinary way, open Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates, choose the iOS Developer Beta, then return to Software Update and follow the prompts. Before you begin, back up your iPhone and keep a backup made before the beta if you may need to return to public iOS: Apple warns that a backup made on beta software may not restore to an earlier iOS version.
Before installing: protect your data and check access
- Back up the iPhone first. Apple recommends backing up devices before beta software. You can back up with iCloud or a computer. If you might downgrade, preserve a backup made before installing the beta; a beta-created backup may not be compatible with an earlier public iOS release. - Expect preview-software trade-offs. Apple describes beta software as preview software for developers to test platform changes and app compatibility. Apps or features may not behave as they do on a public release, so consider whether this is an iPhone you can use while encountering compatibility problems. Apple does not provide a failure rate or data-loss probability for this installation process.
- Check the Apple Account. The iPhone must be signed in with the Apple Account that has access to the Developer beta. If the beta option is absent, first check the account and its beta eligibility.
You do not need to turn on Developer Mode just to select and install an iOS beta. Apple describes Developer Mode as a setting for running locally installed development apps, such as apps run from Xcode or an IPA, not as part of the beta update steps.
Install the beta from iPhone Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates.
- Select the iOS Developer Beta option available for your account.
- Return to the Software Update screen and follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the offered beta.
These are Apple’s current documented steps for selecting a Developer beta. Which beta is offered can change, so the screen on your iPhone—not an assumed version number—is the guide to availability. Apple’s instructions are at Installing and using Apple beta software.
Choose the installation method that fits

The Settings method is the straightforward choice for most readers. The Finder method offers control over the image file but requires attention to its version. Apple’s documentation for the alternate route is in Xcode Help: Install a beta operating system on a device.

Install with a Finder restore image
- Connect the iPhone to a Mac and select it in Finder.
- Hold the Option key and click Restore.
- Choose the downloaded .ipsw file and proceed with the restore.
Apple says the beta image must be the same version as, or newer than, the version installed on the iPhone. An older image will fail. This is an alternate technical procedure, not a prerequisite for installing through Software Update.

Turning off beta updates prevents the iPhone from receiving additional beta updates; it does not remove the beta already installed. On iOS 16.4 or later, the documented setting is Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates > Off. Apple’s Unenroll Your Devices page explains this option.

To return immediately to the current publicly released iOS, Apple says you must erase and restore the iPhone. A backup created while the phone is running beta software may not restore to an earlier iOS version, which is why the pre-beta backup matters.
