Stop using the PC and shut it down if your RTX 5090 power plug or cable is unusually hot, smells burnt, looks discolored or deformed, or feels loose. Once the system is off, disconnect it from power only if you can do so safely, and let the card cool before touching or removing it. Do not keep gaming, repeatedly restart the computer, or force apart a connector that appears melted or fused.
What to do immediately
- Stop the workload and shut down the PC. Do not leave the GPU under load or repeatedly power-cycle a system with suspected connector damage.
- Disconnect power only if it is safe. If the connector or surrounding area appears melted, fused, or otherwise unsafe to handle, do not force it apart. Wait for the system to cool and seek instructions from the GPU and PSU manufacturers.
- Let the graphics card cool before touching or removing it. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 User Guide, Revision 1 explicitly says to wait until the card has cooled before taking it out of the system.
- Document the condition without disturbing the connection. Note the GPU and PSU models, how the card is powered, and any visible discoloration or deformation. Contact the graphics-card maker and PSU maker for model-specific instructions on inspection, repair, and warranty.
There is no universal temperature threshold in the cited guidance that lets an owner determine safety by touch or a photograph. The cause also cannot be identified reliably from appearance alone, so do not assume the GPU, PSU, cable, or installation is necessarily at fault.
Check the power setup only after it is cool and safe
Do not inspect, reseat, or remove a suspect plug while the system is powered or hot. If the connection is visibly heat-damaged, loose, or difficult to separate, stop and ask the manufacturers how they want it handled rather than treating it as a routine cable reseat.
RTX 5090 Founders Edition
NVIDIA’s Revision 1 guide specifies a power supply rated for at least 1000 W and lists two supported power configurations: at least four PCIe 8-pin cables connected to the included RTX 5090 adapter, or one PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated for at least 600 W. For a GeForce RTX 50 Series Founders Edition, NVIDIA says: “Use only the included NVIDIA power connector adapter for your GeForce RTX 50 Series Founders Edition graphics card.” When using that adapter, the four 8-pin PCIe cables must be independent and dedicated connections from the PSU.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
NVIDIA also advises connecting the adapter to the GPU before installing the card, so the fit can be checked. Its instruction is: “Ensure the power plug is fully inserted and seated flush against the power receptacle.” These directions apply to the Founders Edition; use the instructions for the exact board-partner RTX 5090 model if you own a non-Founders Edition card.
Routing and physical fit
After the system is cool and a connection is safe to examine, check whether the case side panel presses on the cable, the cable is sharply bent close to the plug, or its weight pulls sideways on the connection. Technical reporting on high-power GPU connections identifies full insertion at both ends and routing without strain as practical precautions. These checks may help identify a poor fit, but careful routing does not guarantee that a connector cannot overheat.

Do not substitute an unverified modular cable
A PSU-side modular cable that looks right is not proof of electrical compatibility. If a cable needs replacement, use only a part the PSU maker approves for the exact PSU model, and follow the GPU and PSU makers’ directions before powering on again. A replacement cable cannot repair a damaged socket on the graphics card.
The connector generation alone does not establish compatibility or eliminate risk. MSI’s September 11, 2026 guidance describes 12V-2×6 as an update to 12VHPWR, with revised contacts and sense-pin structure intended to improve connection detection and reliability when installed correctly. MSI also notes that a native cable can simplify installation, but requirements vary by graphics-card model. This does not mean a 12V-2×6 connection cannot overheat.

How to handle inspection, repair, and warranty
Before buying a cable or attempting repair, ask both the GPU maker and PSU maker what they want inspected and whether the system should be returned for service. Include the exact card and PSU models, the cable or adapter used, and clear photos if the manufacturers request them. Keep purchase and configuration details, and check the warranty terms for the exact card: NVIDIA’s GeForce graphics-card warranty page includes the RTX 5090 Founders Edition, but the landing page does not settle coverage for every cause or situation.
Warranty outcomes should not be inferred from a single reported case. Tom’s Hardware reported on September 26, 2026, on a user-described melted RTX 5090 connection involving an ASRock PG-1600G PSU and an alleged PNY support response; the report says the claim was denied in that individual case and reproduces the reported message. That account is not a verified, universal PNY warranty rule or a finding about every third-party PSU cable. Obtain written, model-specific guidance from the manufacturers handling your equipment.

PSU ratings are not a diagnosis
For the RTX 5090 Founders Edition, NVIDIA’s guide gives a minimum PSU rating of 1000 W. Separately, MSI’s September 11, 2026 guidance describes the RTX 5090 as 575 W Total Graphics Power and recommends a 1000 W-or-greater “Standard Gaming PSU.” MSI says actual PSU needs vary with the CPU, card model, overclocking, cooling, and other components, so its figure is manufacturer guidance rather than a universal guarantee. Meeting a wattage recommendation does not establish that a hot connector is safe or explain why it overheated.
