Linux on PS5 Pro remains an unverified possibility in the evidence available here: there is no established conclusion about whether it currently works, which firmware might support it, or how RPCS3 would perform on that hardware. Do not choose it on the assumption that support or performance is confirmed.
Can you emulate PS3 games on Linux?
Yes. RPCS3 is an open-source PS3 emulator, and its project FAQ is the clearest documented Linux route identified for this purpose. The project directs users to install official PS3 firmware. Use its current setup instructions and legitimate game copies; RPCS3 says it does not condone piracy and points to purchased games or discs as legitimate sources. How to check whether a specific game will run in RPCS3
- Look up the exact game. Search the RPCS3 compatibility list for the title, and check the relevant entry rather than assuming all PS3 games behave alike.
- Read the status and notes. The project’s “Playable” status means a game can be completed with playable performance and no game-breaking glitches. “Ingame” covers entries that cannot be finished, have serious glitches, or have insufficient performance. Those definitions describe project testing, not a guarantee for your particular computer.
- Check your intended setup. Compatibility is per game and the list changes frequently. Treat the entry as guidance, then compare the listed experience and notes with your host hardware and expectations.
- Follow current setup instructions. Install official PS3 firmware using the project’s instructions and use a legitimate copy of the game.
The compatibility page is a frequently changing tested database. When retrieved on October 7, 2026, it displayed 3,615 games and 6,402 IDs, with 69.85% marked Playable and 27.19% Ingame. These are a dated snapshot of database entries, not a benchmark, a promise that those games will run well on any PC, or evidence of PS5 Pro performance. Check the live list for the game you care about.

When streaming or an original console makes more sense
Choose a PS3 console for native hardware
An original PlayStation 3 avoids software-emulation compatibility questions because games run on PS3 hardware. It is the direct option if you want to play a title on the system it was made for. For used hardware, assess the specific console and its condition; current second-hand availability and pricing are not established here.
Choose Premium streaming for eligible catalog titles
PlayStation Plus Premium offers streaming for selected original PS3 games in supported markets and on eligible devices. Sony’s 2022 announcement described PS3 games streamed through the service, but that launch announcement is not a guarantee that a particular game is available now. For PC streaming, Sony’s support guidance requires a Premium subscription, a compatible controller, and broadband with a listed minimum speed of 5 Mbps. That minimum is Sony’s stated requirement, not a guarantee of smooth streaming in every home network. Confirm current requirements and availability on the support page for your country. - Want local play on Linux and willing to configure an emulator? Start with RPCS3, but verify the exact title’s status before choosing or upgrading hardware.
- Want native PS3 play without emulation? An original PS3 is the direct hardware option; evaluate the individual used console.
- Want to avoid owning PS3 hardware? Check whether the title is currently offered through Premium streaming in your region and on your device, and account for the subscription and network requirements.
- Considering a Linux-modded PS5 Pro specifically? Treat that path as unconfirmed unless you find current, device-specific evidence for Linux support and the performance of the game you want.
