If you want an alternative to Bose QuietComfort, start with the Sony WH-1000XM6 for a premium all-rounder with strong noise cancellation. Choose Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM 5 Wireless if sound is your priority, the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless if battery life and value matter most, or Apple AirPods Max 2 if you already use Apple devices. No one model is best for everyone: fit, ANC, sound preferences, ecosystem features, and current price all affect the choice.
Which headphones are worth considering instead of Bose QuietComfort?
These are over-ear noise-canceling headphones, but they suit different priorities. Reviewers do not use one standardized test or weigh features identically, so their ANC judgments are best read as publication-specific assessments rather than a universal ranking.
| Headphones | Consider them if… | What the cited reviews say |
|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | You want a premium all-rounder and strong ANC. | TechRadar favors the Sony over AirPods Max in its ANC comparison; Tom’s Guide rates Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) highly for ANC in its guide. These are separate review judgments, not results from a shared test. TechRadar; Tom’s Guide |
| Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless | You want a current premium Sennheiser option with a sound-focused appeal. | What Hi-Fi? positions it as a close rival to standard Bose QuietComfort (2nd Gen). Its ANC review says it handles common sounds but sits below Sony and Bose flagships. What Hi-Fi?; What Hi-Fi? |
| Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless | You prioritize battery life and value. | SoundGuys describes it as a battery-life and sound-quality option, with wired audio and multiple codecs. Its reviewer measured 56 hours and 21 minutes of playback in a 2025 test; that result is not a runtime guarantee for every listener. SoundGuys |
| Apple AirPods Max 2 | You already use Apple devices and value ecosystem convenience. | What Hi-Fi? includes AirPods Max 2 among premium competitors. TechRadar describes AirPods Max ease-of-use features for Apple owners, but its cited comparison does not clearly distinguish Max 2. Do not treat comparisons of the earlier AirPods Max as Max 2 test results. What Hi-Fi?; TechRadar |
Choose by the feature you care about most
For noise cancellation: Sony WH-1000XM6
Sony is a sensible first pick if minimizing distractions is your top concern and you want a premium headphone that also works as an all-rounder. TechRadar’s Sony-versus-Apple comparison favors the WH-1000XM6 for ANC. That does not establish that it will outperform every Bose QuietComfort model in every setting; Tom’s Guide, for example, describes the Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) as offering the best ANC it had experienced in its guide. Treat these as assessments within separate reviews, not a head-to-head standardized result.
For sound appeal with capable ANC: Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless
What Hi-Fi? places the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless close to the standard Bose QuietComfort (2nd Gen) as a premium rival. It reports that the Sennheiser handles traffic, wind, air-conditioning hum, and voices, while its ANC falls short of Sony and Bose flagship headphones. Sennheiser’s statement, relayed by What Hi-Fi?, that midrange cancellation is “three times” better than the predecessor is a manufacturer claim, not an independently reported measurement.

For long playback between charges: Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless
The MOMENTUM 4 is worth a look if battery life is more important to you than buying the newest premium model. SoundGuys measured 56 hours and 21 minutes of playback in its 2025 test. Your results may differ with volume, settings, connection, and use. SoundGuys also notes wired audio and support for multiple codecs, which may matter if you want listening options beyond a wireless Bluetooth connection.
For Apple-device convenience: AirPods Max 2
AirPods Max 2 has its clearest case for someone already invested in Apple devices and who values the ease-of-use features associated with AirPods. What Hi-Fi? lists Max 2 among premium competitors. The available TechRadar ecosystem discussion is general AirPods Max context and does not clearly separate the second generation. RTINGS’ cited comparison concerns the previous AirPods Max, so its observations about that model’s Spatial Audio, noise blocking, and comfort relative to MOMENTUM 4 should not be carried over to Max 2.

Where does Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) fit?
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are a step up within Bose’s own range, not an alternative brand. They are relevant if you like the QuietComfort approach but are considering a higher-tier Bose model. Tom’s Guide gives this generation a particularly strong ANC assessment in its guide. That is useful context for comparing options, but it is still that publication’s judgment rather than a standardized ranking against every headphone here.

ANC and sound reviews cannot settle whether a headphone will feel comfortable on your head. Fit is personal, so where possible, try the headphones or check the retailer’s return policy before committing. Use the review comparisons as a shortlist, then compare the features you will actually use: noise reduction, comfort, sound signature, playback time, wired listening, and device integration.
