To free space safely, check each game’s current storage requirements, remove optional data only through the game’s own controls, and update or repair files with its official launcher. Plan for temporary patch space as well as the final installed size: an update may need substantially more free space than the game occupies after installation. If supported cleanup is not enough, adding a compatible SSD increases capacity but does not shrink the game.
Check the space an update actually needs
Before deleting anything, distinguish four figures that are often conflated: the game’s final installed footprint, the update download size, the temporary free space needed to unpack or apply files, and any optional resources such as voice packs. A download’s size does not tell you how much free space the updater needs or how large the finished game will be.
For one concrete example, HoYoverse’s Zenless Zone Zero storage requirements, updated October 13, 2025, list a 61 GB final PC installation and recommend 122 GB free before starting: another 61 GB is needed for decompression. HoYoverse also recommends leaving additional room for future patches. These are figures for Zenless Zone Zero, not a general rule for other gacha games.
- Open the game’s current official system-requirements page and check its latest patch notice.
- Compare the listed requirements with free space on the drive where the game is installed, not just the total capacity of the computer.
- Keep the final install size separate from any stated download or temporary working-space requirement.
Storage requirements can change between versions. Use current official information rather than old FAQ figures or a number copied from a previous patch.

Remove optional files through the game’s controls
Some games let you remove selected resources without uninstalling the whole game. Zenless Zone Zero’s resource-management guidance describes Base Resources for downloading mission assets for selected chapters and a voice-pack management screen with uninstall controls. Available options and their behavior can change, so check the current in-game menu before relying on them.
Voice packs can also affect update preparation: Zenless Zone Zero’s update notice says installed voice packs affect pre-download size. If you do not use a pack, remove it through the supported voice-pack menu rather than deleting files from the installation folder.

Do not remove folders, archives, or files by hand unless the game’s official instructions specifically tell you to. The launcher may need those files to verify or update the installation; manual deletion can leave it incomplete.
Use the official launcher to update or repair
HoYoverse recommends using the official update tool for Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero. Its update and launch troubleshooting guidance lists insufficient storage and incomplete or corrupted downloads among possible causes of failure. It recommends clearing space and verifying files through the launcher, with reinstalling as a fallback.

- Close the game and open its official launcher or platform client.
- Free enough space for the current update’s stated requirements, if available.
- Run the launcher’s file verification or repair option if an update fails or the installation appears damaged.
- Reinstall only if the official troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem.
Other possible causes include network restrictions, firewall or antivirus interference, and outdated software or drivers. If an update stalls despite having space, check the official troubleshooting guidance rather than deleting game data at random.
Use pre-download to save time, not disk space
Pre-download prepares update resources before a new version is available; it is a scheduling convenience, not a demonstrated way to reduce the game’s lasting footprint. Genshin Impact’s PC pre-install notice says players can continue playing during pre-installation and that it reduces the time spent updating resources on first entry after a version update. Zenless Zone Zero’s notice explains how PC players use the HoYoPlay Pre-Download control and notes that installed voice packs affect required pre-download space.

If the pre-download will not fit, do not assume skipping it will make the final installation smaller. Wait for the update to go live only if the game’s current updater supports that workflow, then follow its on-screen space requirements. Keep the connection stable and close other disk-heavy tasks if the update is struggling; HoYoverse also lists network restrictions and security software as possible causes of update problems.

If you are consolidating games under HoYoPlay, use the launcher’s current scan, association, or path-selection option where available. HoYoPlay FAQ guidance surfaced for Honkai: Star Rail says resources can be associated through an automatic scan or by selecting the path manually, and warns that a deletion choice after association may remove resources from both the old launcher and HoYoPlay.

- Use the current launcher’s option to scan for or select the existing game folder.
- Let the launcher associate or verify the installation, then start the game from the new launcher to confirm it works.
- Only then consider removing an old folder, and read any deletion prompt carefully; do not assume it removes only a duplicate copy.
When adding storage makes sense
If supported cleanup still leaves too little room, a larger drive adds capacity for games and their updates. HoYoverse recommends SSD installation for Zenless Zone Zero on PC in its system requirements. An SSD upgrade does not reduce a game’s file size, and not every drive fits every computer.
