Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

In a large, sunlit room, the picture is likely to look washed out. The room, image size and brightness measurement all matter—not just the number on the projector’s box.
When 500 lumens can work
BenQ’s model-specific guidance for its 500-ANSI-lumen GV50 illustrates how much viewing conditions matter: it gives an 80-inch image as an example for a dark room, 60 inches for soft lighting, and 40 inches for a well-lit room with no daylight. Those are examples for the GV50, not guarantees for every projector rated at 500 lumens. BenQ suggests a softly lit or darker environment for a more enjoyable experience. BenQ’s GV50 daytime-use guidance is dated October 9, 2024.
So, a 500-lumen projector may be serviceable for a smaller picture in a room where you can control the light. It is a poor fit if you need a large image while daylight or bright room lighting reaches the screen.
Why a bright room makes the picture harder to see
A larger image spreads the light out
A projector distributes its output across the image. At the same output, making the image larger spreads that light over more screen area, so the image looks dimmer. Reducing the projected image size can make an existing projector more usable without changing its output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Room light reduces perceived contrast
Light falling on the screen competes with the projected image, making dark areas look less dark and the whole picture appear washed out. Blocking direct daylight, closing blinds or dimming room lights can improve visibility. ProjectorCentral’s Business Projector Buying Guide and classroom brightness guide discuss the effects of ambient light and image size.
How much brightness to consider for a bright room

These figures help set expectations, but the right choice still depends on the screen size and how much light reaches it. Epson’s UK and US guidance uses different categories, so do not treat either recommendation as a promise that a particular projector will look good in every room.

For comparisons, look for a brightness figure explicitly measured in ANSI or ISO lumens rather than an unspecified “lumen” claim. ProjectorCentral identifies ANSI or ISO lumens as reliable specifications for comparing projector brightness in its buying guide. An unqualified listing figure cannot safely be compared directly with a standardized measurement.

Where available, check color brightness as well as white brightness. Epson says its white-brightness measurement uses ISO 21118 and its color-brightness measurement uses IDMS 15.4; it notes that on some projectors color brightness may be as little as one-third of the stated figure when only white brightness is provided. Epson’s color-brightness guide explains the distinction. Also check the picture mode: a maximum-brightness mode may sacrifice color accuracy, as ProjectorCentral notes in its projector guide.

What to change if your 500-lumen projector looks washed out
- Make the image smaller. Less screen area lets the same projected light produce a brighter-looking image.
- Keep light off the screen. Close blinds, block direct daylight or move viewing to a darker time of day.
- Dim the room. Lowering room lighting can improve perceived contrast without changing the projector.
- Consider an ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen. Its material may help manage competing light, but it does not increase the projector’s output. Results depend on screen orientation and viewing angle, and some materials can narrow the useful viewing positions. See ProjectorCentral’s screen guidance.
What to compare before choosing a projector
- Standardized brightness: Check for an explicit ANSI or ISO lumen rating, plus color brightness where provided.
- Image size: Decide how large the image needs to be; a larger picture needs more output to look equally bright.
- Room light: Consider whether windows or lamps shine directly on the screen and whether you can control them.
- Screen: Account for material, gain, orientation and viewing angle if you are choosing a screen.
- Placement: Check throw distance to confirm the projector can make the desired image from your intended position. Throw distance affects image size and placement, but does not by itself make a fixed-size image brighter.
