Use Google Search Console to measure how your pages appear in Google Search across countries, and GA4 to measure the organic-search sessions and activity that follow those clicks. Compare equivalent date ranges by country, then break down changes by landing page, query, and device to pinpoint what moved.
What each platform measures
Search Console reports Google Search exposure: clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position. Use its query, page, country, date, and device dimensions to see where visibility changed. CTR is clicks divided by impressions.
GA4 measures activity recorded on your website. To evaluate organic visits, use session-scoped acquisition data and inspect landing pages and on-site activity by country. These are different stages of the journey: Search Console clicks are not interchangeable with GA4 sessions.
Compare international performance in Search Console
- Open the Search Console property for the site and go to Performance > Search results.
- Choose a date range, then compare it with an equivalent period—for example, the same number of days immediately before it. Keep the comparison consistent when looking across countries.
- Review clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position. Add or select the Country dimension to find markets with changes.
- For a country with a notable change, inspect the Pages and Queries dimensions to determine whether it affects many pages or queries, or is concentrated in a few.
- Use the device breakdown to check whether the pattern differs between device types.
Start with the country comparison, then use pages, queries, and devices to explain the difference. A market-level drop concentrated on a few landing pages calls for a different investigation than a broad drop across the site.

Measure organic visits in GA4
Use Traffic acquisition for session-level comparison
Open Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Use the session-scoped source/medium or channel dimension to isolate organic search, then compare sessions by country and landing page. Traffic acquisition focuses on new sessions; User acquisition instead focuses on new users, so choose the report that matches the question.
Use Landing page to identify entry pages
The Landing page report identifies the first page seen in a session. Add or use session source/medium to understand which of those sessions arrived through organic search, and compare landing pages across countries. This helps distinguish a change in overall market traffic from a change driven by particular entry pages.

Link Search Console to GA4 for a combined report
- Link the relevant Search Console property to the GA4 web data stream that covers the same set of pages. Follow Google’s Search Console linking instructions.
- If Search Console reports do not appear in the GA4 navigation, open Library and publish the Search Console report collection, as described in Google’s report-collection instructions.
- Open the Google organic search traffic report. It combines landing pages with compatible Analytics and Search Console metrics, with country and device drilldowns.
The Search Console query dimension and its metrics in GA4 require an active link. Data availability begins according to when the Search Console property is verified and the web stream is created, so a newly linked setup should not be expected to show earlier linked-report data.
Diagnose a country that is underperforming
- Confirm the change in Search Console and GA4 separately: check search clicks and impressions in Search Console, then organic-search sessions in GA4.
- Compare equivalent date ranges and inspect the country, landing pages, queries, and devices. Determine whether the shift is broad or concentrated.
- If the change centers on particular pages or countries, review the international page implementation. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking hreflang when traffic for specific countries is low.
Google continues to support and use hreflang. The former International Targeting report and its country-targeting feature are no longer available; Google Search Console Help says, “The International Targeting report has been deprecated.” See Google’s deprecation notice.

Account for reporting delays and differences
- Linked-report delay: Search Console data becomes available in GA4 48 hours after Search Console collects it, according to Google Analytics Help.
- History limit: Search Console retains 16 months of data, which also sets the maximum history available in linked Analytics reports, according to Google Search Console Help.
- Latest data: The newest Search Console data may be preliminary and change over the next few hours. Avoid treating a very recent fluctuation as final.
- Aggregation: Property-level and page-level aggregation count results differently. As a result, chart and table totals, CTR, or average position may not align as expected. Check the aggregation context before interpreting a discrepancy.
The 48-hour delay and 16-month history are Google’s published product limits, not measures of SEO performance.
