If someone has posted or used a ship design you created, preserve the original and the suspected copy, document where each appeared, then submit a copyright report through the service provider’s official reporting channel. First identify what was copied: a standalone illustration, a design embodied in a vessel hull, or both. Those may involve different U.S. protections, and a platform takedown is not a court ruling.
What kind of ship design was copied?
Start by distinguishing the material at issue. A drawing or digital image of a ship, a design embodied in an actual vessel hull, and the hull itself are not automatically covered by the same legal route.
- Artwork: A standalone illustration may raise a copyright question. A vessel-design registration is separate from copyright registration, so registering a vessel design does not itself register a copyright in an illustration. The U.S. Copyright Office explains the distinction in its Registration of Vessel Designs guidance.
- Design embodied in a hull: Chapter 13 of Title 17 provides a distinct, limited protection route for qualifying original designs embodied in vessel hulls, including hull-and-deck combinations. Eligibility, scope, term, ownership, and procedure differ from copyright; statutory rights are subject to conditions and exceptions. The Copyright Office says an application for the described vessel-design protection must be made within two years after the design is made public. Its deposit requirements concern clear, complete drawings or photographs with enough views to show the design adequately. That is a specific registration requirement, not a universal checklist for filing an online platform report.
Similarity by itself does not establish infringement. Ideas and functional features can be treated differently from protectable expression. The Copyright Claims Board describes ownership of a valid copyright and unauthorized use as central to a copyright infringement claim; access and substantial similarity of protected expression can also be relevant. Build a clear, dated evidence record
Preserve evidence before contacting the poster or submitting a report. Keep originals unchanged, make separate working copies for markup, and organize the record so another person can understand what was created, what appears to be copied, and where it was found.
- Preserve your original work. Keep the original image or drawing file and, if available, source files, sketches, drafts, dated exports, and earlier publication records that support the creation timeline. For paper art, retain the physical original; a scanner can make a working digital copy, but digitization does not prove authorship or infringement.
- Capture the suspected copy in context. Record its full page address, the publicly shown account or seller identity, and the date and time you captured it. Save a screenshot or page copy if the service permits. Keep the capture unaltered; make a separate annotated version if you want to mark similarities.
- Make a labeled comparison. Put the original and suspected copy side by side, identify each item and its date, and compare equivalent views. Note concrete expressive details that appear in both rather than relying only on a general impression that the designs look alike. Keep functional elements and broad ideas distinct from the expression you claim was copied.
- Keep a chronology. Save messages with the poster, platform, or other parties, along with report confirmations, replies, and any counter-notice. Organize the documents by date or by work, and write down what happened at each step. The Copyright Claims Board’s claimant evidence guidance recommends keeping copies of works and related communications and presenting the facts thoroughly.
Submit a copyright report to the service
For material posted online, use the service provider’s current official copyright reporting form or designated reporting channel. The U.S. DMCA framework provides a notice-and-takedown process, and qualifying service providers designate agents to receive notices. The U.S. Copyright Office’s The Digital Millennium Copyright Act overview explains the general framework; each service’s form and submission requirements can vary.

Prepare to identify the original work, the exact material you are reporting, where each work appears, and a way for the platform to contact you. Follow the platform’s current form carefully, describe the material precisely, and retain a copy of what you submit and any confirmation. Do not treat a report as proof that a court or agency has decided the dispute.
What happens if the poster challenges the report?
A person whose material was removed may submit a counter-notice under the DMCA process. After a compliant counter-notice, a provider may restore access after 10 to 14 business days unless the original sender informs the provider that a court action has been filed. The timing and process are described by the Copyright Office in Section 512 of Title 17.

If you receive a counter-notice, read the provider’s explanation and the applicable process before deciding what to do. Consider qualified legal advice where ownership is disputed, the commercial stakes are significant, or you are weighing court action. A notice or counter-notice is part of a platform process; neither is a final court determination.

For U.S. vessel-design protection, the Chapter 13 registration route is distinct from reporting an online image. If your concern involves a design embodied in a hull, review the Copyright Office’s registration requirements and statutory scope rather than assuming an illustration report addresses the hull-design issue. If the copied material is only artwork, vessel-design registration should not be described as a substitute for copyright registration.

The Copyright Claims Board offers another U.S. copyright dispute option for eligible claims, but its guidance says respondents must reside in the United States. It is separate from a platform takedown process. Whether a particular design, claimant, or dispute qualifies depends on the facts and applicable rules.
