There is no reliable universal figure showing how much more or less RAM Windows 11 uses than Windows 10 on the same hardware. A boot-time reading alone cannot settle the comparison: what you see depends on system setup, background software, open applications, and when memory is measured. To find out whether an upgrade will suit your PC, compare the same machine under the same workload and judge responsiveness alongside memory use.
Is Windows 11 more RAM-hungry than Windows 10?
The available figures do not establish a dependable Windows 11-versus-Windows 10 RAM difference on identical hardware. Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum is 4 GB, but that is a minimum requirement—not a promise of comfortable multitasking. Its broader support guidance recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term and says 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance projects. Those are general recommendations, not results from a controlled comparison of the two operating systems. Microsoft’s memory guidance and its Windows 11 requirements describe needs, not a measured difference between Windows versions.
So, if you are deciding whether a particular PC will feel slower after an upgrade, the more useful question is whether its memory can accommodate your actual applications without harming responsiveness. An idle number by itself cannot answer that.
Why RAM readings can be misleading
Idle and post-boot figures are snapshots
Windows may be using memory for the system, drivers, startup programs, and background tasks before you open anything. A measurement also depends on whether the computer has finished starting and settling. Microsoft’s Memory Footprint assessment records memory after the start screen appears and before applications launch; Microsoft explicitly says this does not represent ordinary computer operation. The assessment documentation therefore should not be read as a typical-use benchmark.

Memory use needs a workload and an outcome
A PC with a browser, office apps, or an editing project open is doing different work from one sitting at the desktop. For a useful comparison, record what is running, when you took the reading, and whether the computer responds smoothly. A displayed RAM percentage alone does not show whether the workload fits comfortably.
What published examples do—and do not—show
Recent published observations help illustrate how much figures vary, but neither gives a controlled Windows 10-versus-11 result on the same machine.

Hardware generation can also undermine a comparison. In Microsoft’s 2023 Windows 10 and Windows 11 laptop comparison, the groups used different generations of laptops, and Microsoft noted it could not match every component. That evidence cannot isolate a RAM-use difference caused by Windows itself. Microsoft’s comparison explains the limitation.
How to compare Windows 10 and Windows 11 fairly
For a meaningful same-hardware comparison, keep the machine and test conditions as consistent as possible. Record memory use together with the workload and the computer’s responsiveness.

- Use the same physical PC and firmware. Keep installed RAM and firmware settings unchanged. If you cannot match a component, disclose it.
- Match the Windows setup. Use the same edition where possible, comparable update levels, device drivers, and startup or background software. Note whether each installation is clean or established.
- Choose a repeatable workload. Decide whether you are comparing a settled desktop, ordinary browsing and office apps, or a memory-intensive task such as editing. Use the same applications and steps on each version.
- Record when and what you measure. Take readings at the same point—for example, after startup has settled or while the chosen applications are open—and identify whether the figure is in-use memory, available memory, or a defined footprint assessment.
- Include the user experience. Note whether applications remain responsive and whether the workload fits, rather than treating a high memory percentage as a verdict on its own.
How much RAM should your PC have?
For Windows 11, Microsoft states a 4 GB minimum, recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term, and says 16 GB or more may be a good fit for photo or video editing and other high-performance projects. These figures are broad guidance, not a guarantee for every PC or workload. Microsoft describes RAM generally as faster than disks for reading and writing information, but that statement is not a Windows-version performance claim. See Microsoft’s guidance.
If a real workload is constrained by memory, adding RAM may help only if the computer supports an upgrade. Before buying, check the device’s supported memory generation, form factor, maximum capacity, and upgradeability. A high idle reading by itself is not enough reason to purchase a module.
