Planets around white dwarfs are shaped by a star’s past: the white dwarf is the compact remnant left after a Sun-like star expands into a red giant and sheds its outer layers. That upheaval can destroy inner planets, leave some distant worlds intact, and send other objects inward later. The difference is therefore not one standard kind of planet, but a system with a more disruptive history and different ways of finding its planets.
What changes when a Sun-like star becomes a white dwarf?
A Sun-like star spends most of its life fusing hydrogen in its core. Late in its evolution, it swells into a red giant, then expels its outer layers and leaves behind a compact white dwarf. The remnant no longer sustains ordinary core fusion and gradually cools. NASA describes this transition and its effects on planetary systems in its account of stellar death and new life.
The expanded star can engulf nearby planets. After the outer layers are lost, planets farther out may remain, while gravity from surviving planets can redirect smaller bodies toward the remnant. A white-dwarf system is thus a later, reshaped version of a system that once orbited a much larger star.
Are their planets always close to the star?
No. Observations show both a giant planet on a wide orbit and one on an exceptionally tight orbit. They illustrate different possible histories, not a single typical white-dwarf planetary arrangement.

How do astronomers find planets and planetary material there?
Polluted atmospheres and dusty disks
Heavy elements in a white dwarf’s atmosphere are interpreted as evidence of recently accreted material, because such elements should otherwise sink out of view. Dusty disks and polluted spectra reveal disrupted planetary material and the dynamics of a system, but they are not, by themselves, detections of intact planets. NASA’s overview of white-dwarf systems describes early spectral evidence from van Maanen’s Star and later discoveries of transiting debris.

Transits and atmospheric measurements
WD 1856 b is especially useful because it passes in front of its white dwarf from our viewpoint. Webb observations have allowed researchers to study the planet’s temperature and atmospheric signatures. NASA reports signs of small cloud particles and hydrocarbons, most likely methane, and describes this as the first atmospheric observation of a planet transiting a dead star.
Candidate planets require confirmation
A 2024 JWST preprint reported two giant-planet candidates around metal-polluted white dwarfs, at projected separations of 11.47 and 34.62 AU and with approximate candidate masses of one to seven Jupiter masses. The authors called them candidates and said future observations are needed to confirm them. They should not be counted as confirmed planets on the basis of that report. Why is WD 1856 b so close to its white dwarf?
If WD 1856 b had always orbited at its current distance, it would have been destroyed during the red-giant stage. NASA’s discussion of the Webb observations explains that researchers used the planet’s residual heat and cooling models to infer that it probably started farther away and moved inward later. This is a model-based explanation for WD 1856 b, not a proven route for every close-in white-dwarf planet.

It is a theoretical possibility, not an observed result. A white dwarf’s habitable zone—the range of distances where surface temperatures could allow liquid water—lies very close to the remnant and shifts as it cools. NASA emphasizes that being in a habitable zone does not establish that a planet is habitable or inhabited; see its explanation of the habitable zone.

A 2024 preprint modeled an Earth-like planet around a typical 0.6-solar-mass white dwarf at approximately 0.012 AU and estimated that it could spend nearly 7 billion years in the evolving habitable zone. The study also considered light conditions relevant to photosynthesis and prebiotic chemistry. These are calculations about a hypothetical planet, not evidence that such a planet exists or hosts life. The authors’ work is available as a 2024 preprint.

What can we conclude from the comparisons?
- Evolution matters more than a single orbit type: white-dwarf systems have passed through a destructive stellar expansion, but surviving planets need not all be close to the remnant.
- Evidence comes in different forms: atmospheric pollution and dust indicate planetary debris; transits and microlensing can reveal intact planets.
- The known examples are not a representative census: the intact-planet sample is small, and detection methods favor different kinds of systems. WD 1856 b’s unusual close orbit should not be treated as typical.
- Habitability remains speculative: long-lived habitable-zone conditions have been modeled, but no Earth-like white-dwarf planet or life there has been established by the cited work.
