A Chromebook can be a practical work computer if your essential tasks run in supported web apps. Before replacing a Mac, check the exact apps and features you use, the files you need to edit, offline requirements, accessories, and your employer’s device rules. Microsoft 365 works through web apps on Chromebook, but its Windows and Mac desktop apps cannot be installed there—a consequential difference for desktop-only features and integrations.

Start with your actual work, not the app list

ChromeOS is a different work environment from macOS. Google describes Chromebooks as ChromeOS computers with cloud storage and built-in Google services, but an app’s name appearing on a compatibility list does not establish that every feature, account setup, or workflow will match your Mac. Begin by mapping what you do in a normal workday.

  1. List essential applications. Mark whether you use each in a browser, a native Mac app, or both. Include plugins and extensions, local databases, VPN and security tools, remote desktop services, developer tools, and software for specialist equipment.
  2. Identify the features you actually depend on. Note advanced functions, integrations, add-ins, file types, and steps that happen outside the browser—not just the application name.
  3. Check the vendor’s current ChromeOS support. Test the specific workflow on the Chromebook you are considering, with the account and access you expect to use.

Google’s ChromeOS enterprise FAQ names Zoom, Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office 365, and Teams as examples of work applications available in the ChromeOS environment. That list does not promise feature parity or confirm that your employer’s configuration supports them. Google’s ChromeOS enterprise FAQ is a starting point, not a substitute for testing.

If an essential tool is Mac-desktop-only, treat Linux, Android, or remote access as options to investigate for that particular application—not as a compatibility guarantee. The sources cited here do not establish that any specific Mac-only application runs on a Chromebook.

Check Microsoft 365 against your real tasks

Microsoft says Chromebook users can access Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive, and Outlook through web apps at Microsoft365.com. The web apps can create, edit, and collaborate on files and support email and calendar use. Microsoft also says the Windows and Mac desktop versions cannot be installed on a Chromebook, and that the Android Office apps are not currently supported there.

Test the account and license you will use, then try representative work rather than a simple sample document. Pay particular attention if your work depends on advanced Excel functions, macros, add-ins, specialized fonts, complex formatting, or desktop integrations. Microsoft notes that some more advanced editing features may require a Microsoft 365 subscription; confirm that your organization’s account provides the needed access.

Find out what still works without internet

Google lists offline-ready functions for Gmail, Keep, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Calendar. It also lists viewing and editing photos stored on the device and playing local media. This covers some disconnected work, but it does not mean every app, message, or cloud file is automatically available offline. Google’s Chromebook offline guidance describes the supported uses.

  1. Choose a realistic set of documents, messages, and tools you would need during travel or an outage.
  2. Prepare the items as required by each app, then disconnect the Chromebook from the internet.
  3. Check that you can complete the necessary tasks and understand what changes are saved locally.
  4. Reconnect and confirm that edits and other changes sync as expected.

Check third-party work tools individually. Do not assume they offer offline access just because Google’s own apps have some offline functions.

Test file compatibility and storage before migrating

Chromebook files can be stored on the device or online through a cloud file service. Google’s guidance lists common types such as PDFs, text files, images, ZIP and RAR archives, and media formats. Its file-type guidance also lists Word and Excel formats, while PowerPoint formats in that list are read-only. Opening a file is not proof that it can be edited as needed or that every feature will be preserved. Check the intended app and exact format in Google’s file-type guidance.

Before moving work, make a backup and test examples that reflect your real workload:

Verify your dock, displays, and other accessories

Google identifies USB drives, mice, keyboards, and external storage among accessories usable with Chromebooks. It also cautions that some files or devices may not work on work- or school-managed Chromebooks. Check Google’s device and file guidance and your organization’s restrictions.

Make an inventory of your current setup: dock, monitors, adapters, printer, storage, headset, security key, and any specialist equipment. Then verify compatibility with both the exact Chromebook model and each accessory. Basic USB support does not establish that a particular dock, display arrangement, printer, or piece of specialist equipment will work.

Get your employer’s IT approval before switching

Ask your IT administrator whether ChromeOS devices are allowed and what configuration is required. Confirm whether the Chromebook must be enrolled or managed, whether your identity and security tools are supported, and whether personal devices may access work data. Google documents ChromeOS enterprise management and policy capabilities, but only your employer can confirm its own rules and setup. Google’s ChromeOS enterprise FAQ outlines the platform’s management context.

Run a pilot day on the Chromebook you plan to use

If possible, borrow or trial a device in the class you are considering and repeat a normal workday. The Australian Cyber Security Centre advises businesses that rely on desktop applications to test those applications on ChromeOS before adopting it. Its small-business cybersecurity guide supports testing desktop-dependent workflows before committing.

  1. Sign in using the work account and access method you expect to use.
  2. Open each essential service and complete representative tasks, including any advanced features.
  3. Join a meeting and test the headset, camera, and any other equipment it requires.
  4. Open and edit representative files, then check the results in the format and service your colleagues use.
  5. Connect your actual dock, displays, storage, and other necessary accessories.
  6. Test offline work if you need it, then reconnect and verify synchronization.

Use the pilot to resolve specific failures with the app vendor or IT team. Do not treat a successful sign-in or a file opening as proof that the full workday is covered.

Compare Chromebook models on the needs that affect your work

Once ChromeOS itself fits your workflow, compare candidate devices against the requirements you established. The Chromebook label alone does not settle suitability, and no model-specific recommendation follows from the platform checks above.

  • App compatibility: Confirm web-app support and any desktop-only functions your tasks require.
  • Offline work: Check which essential tools and files remain usable without a connection.
  • File workflow: Verify formats, editing needs, storage location, and employer data rules.
  • Ports and accessories: Match the exact model’s ports to your dock, displays, storage, and other equipment.
  • Organization support: Confirm enrollment, access policies, and required security configuration with IT.
  • Hardware for your workload: Verify the specific model’s display, keyboard, memory, storage, battery, and update-support details against current product information.
