No—you generally do not need to play every earlier Resident Evil game before starting a new one. Can you understand a Resident Evil game without playing the earlier ones?
Usually, yes. The games have connective narrative, but that does not mean every entry depends on completing the franchise first. PlayStation’s official Resident Evil FAQ says each game tells a complete story in isolation and points to recaps, environmental storytelling, notes and diaries, and exposition as ways games provide context.
That distinction matters: a standalone story can still reward you for recognizing returning characters, past events, or broader lore. Starting with a newer game may leave some references less meaningful, but the available official guidance does not establish a required list of older games for understanding each main story.

Capcom USA’s beginner guide gives the direct recommendation: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). Do any Resident Evil games have a direct story connection?
Yes. The clearest sequence established in the cited official material is Resident Evil 7 biohazard followed by Resident Evil Village: Capcom describes Village as a sequel to the seventh installment. If you want that story in order, play 7 first. That is a specific two-game connection, not a reason to play every prior series entry.
More broadly, the series maintains a canonical storyline. Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi said it was “not a reboot” and described it as a sequel to the existing mainline titles. That supports treating the games as connected without treating them as one uninterrupted story that newcomers must complete from the beginning.

What about Resident Evil Requiem?
Capcom announced Resident Evil Requiem as the ninth main installment, with a release date of February 27, 2026. Capcom’s 2025 report says it follows a new character and has a story running through the series’ lore. Those details suggest that series familiarity may add context, but the cited material does not specify a mandatory list of earlier games. Because the announced release date has passed, check current platform and edition information before making a purchase; those details are not established here.

- You want a particularly scary entry: Begin with Resident Evil 7 biohazard.
- You want the Ethan Winters story in sequence: Play Resident Evil 7 biohazard, then Resident Evil Village.
- You want the fullest continuity: Playing more entries can reveal more connections and lore, but no cited official guidance says you must finish the whole series to follow an individual game’s main story.
Capcom reported cumulative Resident Evil series sales exceeding 174 million units as of June 30, 2025. That scale reflects the franchise’s reach, not a prerequisite for joining it: you can start with an entry that suits your interests.
