Bitcoin mining is the process of assembling pending transactions into candidate blocks and repeatedly hashing each block header until one hash meets the network’s proof-of-work target. The winning miner can propose the block; other network participants check it against Bitcoin’s rules. This combination of competitive work and independent verification is how new blocks are added to Bitcoin’s transaction history.

What Bitcoin miners actually do

Mining has two connected parts: preparing a candidate block and searching for proof of work. Mining software obtains transaction and block-template information, builds a proposed block, and prepares its header. Mining hardware then tries header values until it finds a hash below the current network target.

The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes the block header as 80 bytes and explains how application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) can iterate through nonce values while searching. When a miner finds a qualifying hash, its software broadcasts the proposed block. Network participants still check that the block and its transactions follow Bitcoin’s rules; hashing does not itself validate every transaction.

Bitcoin.org describes mining as both transaction processing and a consensus system. It also compares the process to a competitive lottery: “Mining also works like a competitive lottery that makes it difficult for any single participant to keep adding new blocks one after another.”

How proof of work helps protect Bitcoin’s transaction history

A cryptographic hash changes unpredictably when its input changes. Miners therefore cannot know in advance which attempted header will produce a hash low enough to meet the target; they must try many possibilities. Checking a proposed result is much easier than finding one.

Each block refers to the previous block and includes proof of work. If someone changes a transaction in an older block, that block’s hash changes, so the proof of work for that block and subsequent blocks must be redone. The more blocks have been added since a transaction was recorded, the more work an attacker would need to redo to replace that history. The rest of the network also checks whether any replacement blocks follow Bitcoin’s rules.

How Bitcoin mining difficulty works

Bitcoin adjusts its mining difficulty every 2,016 blocks, with a target of roughly two weeks for those blocks. The adjustment responds to how quickly blocks were found during the previous interval. It is intended to keep the long-run pace near one block every ten minutes, but individual block intervals vary; they do not arrive on a fixed schedule.

What miners earn: subsidy and transaction fees

A miner whose block is accepted earns the block subsidy plus the transaction fees included in that block. The subsidy is the protocol-created portion of the reward; fees come from transactions in the block. Pool arrangements divide the proceeds among participants according to the pool’s payout rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 2026 SEC filing states that the block reward is currently 3.125 BTC and expects it to fall to 1.5625 BTC after another 210,000 blocks, estimated in that filing as around mid-2028. The mid-2028 estimate is a forecast, not a fixed calendar date: block production varies, so the timing can shift.

Solo mining and pool mining compared

A solo miner searches independently. If successful, the miner receives the block subsidy and transaction fees, but the time until a successful block—and payout—can be long and uncertain. Pool miners contribute hashing work to a shared operation. The pool sets an easier target for shares, allowing participants to demonstrate work more frequently; a share is evidence of contributed work, not necessarily a valid Bitcoin block.

Consideration Solo mining Pool mining
Payout pattern Infrequent and highly variable; a successful miner receives the block proceeds. Generally lower payout variance because proceeds are shared under the pool’s payout method.
How work is counted No pool shares are needed; the miner must find a block that meets the network target. The pool uses an easier share target to track contributed work. A share does not necessarily meet the network target.
Fees and settlement No pool fee or pool settlement rules apply. Fees, minimum payout, settlement timing, and accounting depend on the pool’s current terms.
Block construction and operations The solo miner controls block construction and transaction selection, subject to network rules, and handles the mining operation independently. The pool coordinates block work and distributes proceeds. The degree of participant control and operational terms depend on the pool.

Before joining a pool, check its current fee, payout method, minimum payout, settlement rules, operational reliability, and any geographic restrictions. No particular pool provider or current terms are established here.

What hardware Bitcoin mining uses

The relevant physical product category is a Bitcoin ASIC miner: specialized hardware designed to hash block headers. The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes ASICs as mining hardware, and Cambridge’s Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI) methodology models mining using a basket of specialized Bitcoin ASIC equipment. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ likewise describes specialized hardware as the cost-effective approach today, but that general point does not establish that any specific device will be profitable.

When comparing machines, relevant factors include hashing performance, energy efficiency, purchase price, power draw, noise, heat, warranty, and local electrical requirements. A product category is not a recommendation: no current model, price, inventory, shipping terms, or device-level test is established here. Hosting or colocation is another service category to investigate if you cannot operate equipment yourself; contract terms and providers require separate evaluation.

Can Bitcoin mining be profitable for an individual?

There is no reliable profitability answer without the miner’s hardware, electricity, operating conditions, and current network economics. The outcome can change as Bitcoin’s price, network difficulty, block subsidy, transaction-fee revenue, and operating costs change.

  • Hardware: purchase price, hashing rate, energy use per terahash, and useful life.
  • Power and facility: electricity price, cooling, facility costs, and equipment uptime.
  • Mining arrangement: pool fees and payout rules, if using a pool; hosting or colocation costs, if applicable.
  • Network and revenue: network difficulty, block subsidy, transaction fees, and Bitcoin’s price.

Estimate costs using local electricity rates and actual equipment specifications, then account for uncertainty in revenue and uptime. No reader-specific profitability estimate follows from general hardware guidance alone.

How much energy Bitcoin mining uses—and what the estimates mean

Bitcoin mining’s network-wide electricity use cannot be read directly from a decentralized network. Cambridge CBECI therefore estimates consumption using a hybrid top-down methodology: it models a basket of real mining hardware alongside assumptions about rational miners, and reports lower-bound, best-guess, and upper-bound estimates. Its outputs are estimates, not readings from a single meter covering every mining operation.

The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance’s 2025 estimate put annual Bitcoin electricity consumption at 138 TWh and emissions at 39.8 MtCO2e. The figures are based on reported data representing 48% of global mining activity, not a direct measurement of all miners. The 2025 report describes a survey of 49 digital mining firms headquartered in 16 jurisdictions and operating in 23 countries.

Cambridge Judge Business School reported the following estimates for Bitcoin mining’s energy mix in its 2025 Cambridge Digital Mining Industry Report:

Energy source Estimated share
Renewables 42.6% of Bitcoin mining energy use, as estimated in the 2025 report.
Nuclear 9.8% of Bitcoin mining energy use, as estimated in the 2025 report.
Natural gas 38.2% of Bitcoin mining energy use, as estimated in the 2025 report.
Coal 8.9% of Bitcoin mining energy use, as estimated in the 2025 report.

The report’s 52.4% sustainable-energy figure combines its 42.6% renewables and 9.8% nuclear estimates. These are report findings, not direct measurements of every mining operation.

What to take away before considering mining

  • Mining searches for proof of work on candidate block headers; other network participants check proposed blocks against Bitcoin’s rules.
  • ASICs are the specialized hardware used in the mining process, but a machine’s category does not establish its economics.
  • Pools can smooth payout variance, but their shares are not automatically network-valid blocks, and pool terms affect what participants receive.
  • Energy totals and energy-mix figures are estimates with defined methodologies and coverage, not direct readings of every mining operation.
