If you pasted and ran a command from a fake CAPTCHA page, treat the device as potentially compromised. Stop using it for sensitive activity and arrange an assessment. If it is a work device, contact your IT or security team promptly. Closing the page or deleting a file does not prove the device is clean.
First, work out whether the command actually ran
Copying text is not the same as executing it. The risk changes materially if you opened a system tool, pasted the command, and pressed Enter or otherwise ran it.
- You have not run it: Do not press Enter or execute the text. Close the suspicious page, then reach the intended website using its known address or official app.
- You ran it: Treat the device as potentially compromised and follow the response steps below.
- You are unsure: Say so when you report the incident or consult a technician; do not run the command again to find out what it does.
A CAPTCHA should be completed in the browser. FIN-CSIRT explains: “A CAPTCHA runs in the browser and does not need Windows Run, PowerShell or a terminal.” A page that asks you to open Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, or Terminal and execute copied text is a warning sign, even if its branding looks familiar. FIN-CSIRT guidance and the FTC’s June 2026 consumer alert describe this deceptive pattern.
If you ran the command, take these steps
- Stop using the device for sensitive activity. Avoid signing in to financial, email, work, or other important accounts from it while you seek trusted, device-specific help. Do not assume that closing the tab stopped anything the command may have started.
- Report it promptly if it is a work device. Contact your organization’s IT or security team and follow its incident process. MyCERT also advises prompt reporting when business or financial systems may have been accessible. MyCERT advisory.
- For a personal device, arrange a trusted assessment. Seek guidance from a reputable technician or a recognized support channel for your device and operating system. The appropriate recovery steps depend on what ran and what happened afterward; there is no single cleanup sequence established for every case.
- Write down what happened. Note the time, device and operating system, website or page, whether you ran the command, and whether you entered a password or approved an additional prompt. Share this account with your responders or technician. Do not post the command publicly or run it again for analysis.
If you entered a password or approved a prompt, include that detail when seeking help. It may change what responders need to investigate.

Why running the command can be serious
Fake CAPTCHA pages can imitate a routine human check, then direct a visitor to paste clipboard contents into a system utility. The FTC describes a Windows sequence involving Windows + R, Ctrl + V, and Enter, warning that the apparent verification can run hidden malware. Its June 2026 alert puts it plainly: “The screen might say ‘security verification,’ but you’re actually following the steps to paste and run hidden malware on your device.”
Microsoft’s August 28, 2026 report describes one observed campaign, called TerminalFix: a compromised website displayed a fake Cloudflare Turnstile overlay; a user interaction put a malicious PowerShell command on the clipboard; running it downloaded a ZIP archive, extracted files, and launched a batch file. Microsoft then documented DLL sideloading and retrieval of further payloads. These are details of that campaign, not a prediction that every fake CAPTCHA installs the same malware or behaves identically. Microsoft Security Research’s TerminalFix report.

What if you only viewed the page or copied the text?
Viewing a deceptive page is not the same as running its command. MyCERT says users who only viewed the page were at lower risk in the campaign described in its advisory. That is not proof that every page is harmless before execution: do not continue interacting with it, and close it. If you only copied the text, do not paste it into a terminal or other system tool. If you cannot tell whether it ran, treat that uncertainty as part of your incident report.

- Closing the page does not establish that a command already run has stopped or that the device is safe.
- Deleting a file or running one scan does not, by itself, prove the device is clean.
- The TerminalFix steps Microsoft documented apply to its observed campaign; they do not establish what happened on your particular device.
Microsoft’s mitigation guidance for affected hosts is: “Investigate affected hosts thoroughly.” For managed environments, the company also recommends measures such as restricting PowerShell and Run-dialog use, user education, and monitoring campaign-specific indicators. Those are organizational defenses, not a universal consumer cleanup recipe.
