To move to a new Fitbit without losing the history already recorded, sync the old tracker, then set up the replacement in the Google Health app while signed in to the same Google Account that holds your existing Fitbit history. An export is optional for this normal replacement process; it is useful as a separate backup. Erase the old tracker separately before handing it to someone else.

How to replace your Fitbit and keep your history

  1. Check which account contains your history. Open the Google Health app and confirm that your past activity and health summaries appear under the Google Account you intend to keep using. Do not create a second account for the new tracker if your history is associated with another one. Google says people using an original Fitbit account need to move to a Google Account to access Google Health. Its published migration announcement said historical Fitbit data remained available after moving to a Google Account: Google’s Fitbit account migration announcement.
  2. Sync the old tracker. Keep it near your phone, open the Google Health app, and give it time to sync before setting it aside. Google says Fitbit devices sync automatically throughout the day and when the app is opened with the device nearby. To request a manual sync, go to Connections > Sync. See Google’s Fitbit sync instructions.
  3. Back up your data if you want an independent copy. This is optional for a same-account device replacement. Google Account users can use Google’s data download flow and select Google Health. The help page also describes an archive and selected-data export for original Fitbit logins; large archives can take a few days to prepare. Because access requirements have changed, use Google’s current instructions rather than assuming an old Fitbit-login route is still available: Google Health account and data guidance.
  4. Check phone compatibility and set up the replacement. The Google Health app requires Android 11 or later, or iOS 16.4 or later. Some phones that meet the operating-system requirement may still have compatibility issues, so check support for both your phone and the specific tracker. Use the setup flow in the app for your new model; setup details can differ by device.
  5. Verify the result. Look for your historical summaries in the app, then confirm the new tracker has synced recently. Google documents the last-synced status under Connections in its sync help.
  6. Review partner-app connections if you use them. In the app, check Connections > Partner Apps for any connection marked Needs Action, then follow that app’s reconnect steps. Google says Fitbit Web APIs will no longer be supported starting October 30, 2026. That affects partner integrations, not historical data already synced to your Google Health account. Google states that history already synced to the account will not be deleted because of this connection change. Details: Google’s partner-app connection guidance.
  7. Erase the old tracker before giving it away. Account deletion and clearing local data from a device are separate actions. Use the instructions for your tracker model to erase it before selling, donating, or recycling it. Google’s account and device guidance explains the distinction.

Why the same account matters more than the tracker

Your tracker records data, then syncs it to the account. History that has already synced is associated with that account rather than being stored only on the old tracker. Google says multiple Fitbit devices can sync to the same account, so you can add a replacement without creating a new history account. The key check is whether you can access the account that already shows your data.

Replacing a tracker is different from moving a legacy Fitbit login

There are two separate transitions that can overlap: adding a new device and changing the account used to access Fitbit history. If your history is already visible in Google Health under the Google Account you plan to use, focus on syncing the old tracker and setting up the new one. If your data is still tied to an original Fitbit login, account access comes first.

Google’s current help says Fitbit-account users needed to move to Google Accounts to access Google Health beginning May 19, 2026. It also said data could be downloaded or deleted before deletion processing began July 15, 2026; both dates have passed. If you cannot sign in or find your history, contact Google support rather than relying on an old login path or creating another account. The current account requirements are described in Google Health’s account guidance.

When an export is worth doing

You do not need to export your Fitbit data just to replace a tracker while keeping the same account. Consider an export if you want a separate archive, or before a significant account change. For Google Account users, select Google Health in Google’s data download flow. Keep in mind that preparing a large archive can take a few days. An export is a backup copy; it does not move history into a different account or replace the need to sign in to the account where the app displays it. See Google’s data download guidance.

Choosing a replacement is optional

You do not need to buy a new tracker to preserve account history. If you do replace one, check that the model works with your phone and offers the tracking features and form factor you want. Google’s device list includes the Charge 6: Google’s Fitbit device list. Confirm band and charger compatibility for the particular model before reusing accessories; compatibility and prices vary by device and are not established here.
