Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A January 2026 attack abused Rec Room’s friend-finder feature to match submitted phone numbers or email addresses with Rec Room usernames, according to GeekWire. Rec Room said it disabled the feature and banned the user; it described the incident as high-volume use of an API, not a direct intrusion into its servers or database. The company did not confirm how many people were affected, and Rec Room’s services have since closed.
How the Rec Room lookup attack worked
Rec Room’s friend-finder feature was designed to help users find people they knew on the platform by uploading contacts. Its API accepted a phone number or email address and returned a Rec Room username when it found a match. GeekWire reported that in January 2026, someone repeatedly queried the feature at high volume. This was abuse of a working feature, not a reported breach of Rec Room’s underlying servers or database.
Rec Room told GeekWire that it learned about the high-volume queries, disabled the feature and banned the user. A Rec Room staff member, responding in the company’s Discord on February 19, reportedly said users were “abusing this functionality at scale” and that the feature was disabled “out of an abundance of caution.”
What information was exposed—and what remains unconfirmed
Rec Room said the lookup returned only a matched username, not other account information or credentials, and that no phone numbers or email addresses were acquired directly from the company. That describes what Rec Room said the feature disclosed; it does not establish whether someone already holding contact details could use the resulting username to identify or target a person elsewhere.

An unnamed person familiar with the incident told GeekWire that querying U.S. and Canadian phone numbers produced nearly 279,000 records and that the resulting dataset was later sold. Rec Room did not recognize that count and did not provide its own affected-user total. The number and the alleged sale are claims from that source, not confirmed company findings. Rec Room’s March 2026 statement that the platform had over 150 million players and creators, with millions still showing up monthly at the time, is audience context—not an estimate of the incident’s impact.
Did the privacy setting protect users?
The report describes a setting intended to stop people from finding a user by phone number or email. Rec Room said it reviewed the settings and confirmed they worked as intended. The unnamed source told GeekWire that the setting did not prevent mass matching and said their own record appeared in the assembled dataset while the setting was off.

GeekWire’s account does not include a public technical audit or test that resolves those conflicting claims. The available reporting therefore does not establish whether the setting blocked this method of bulk lookup in practice.
What risks follow from a phone-number-to-username match?
A match can help someone make a message more convincing by connecting a known phone number with a Rec Room identity. GeekWire described targeted phishing and harassment as possible consequences. It also noted that public-record searches might help connect an online identity to a real-world identity, and that a SIM-swap attempt could be a further risk. These are potential follow-on harms, not evidence that every person in the alleged dataset experienced them.

A message about Rec Room’s closure or a supposed data export could sound plausible. Do not treat a Rec Room reference as proof that an unsolicited message is genuine, and do not follow unexpected links or give credentials in response to a text or email.
What to do if you linked a phone number or email
- Be cautious with unexpected messages. Avoid links and requests for passwords, verification codes or other credentials, especially in messages claiming you need to export data or resolve an account problem.
- Ask your wireless carrier about account protections. GeekWire advised users to ask about locking a number with a PIN. Contact your carrier to find out what account-lock or number-porting protections it offers; the reporting does not establish which controls are available from particular carriers or in each country.
- Do not assume a security product reverses the exposure. The reported issue was a phone-number-or-email lookup feature returning usernames. The reporting does not establish that antivirus software, an identity-monitoring subscription or a security key would undo that match.
Rec Room has shut down
Rec Room’s Terms of Service state that its applications and related products became unavailable at 12 p.m. Pacific Time on June 1, 2026. Its shutdown is complete, so older instructions framed around an upcoming closure are no longer current.

Before the shutdown, Rec Room said its creation-data export tools were available only in the latest Steam PC update. The tools let creators download underlying room and invention data, but not a working copy of their rooms. That export was for creators’ content; it was not a fix for the phone-number lookup incident, and Rec Room’s platform and website later closed.
