First, determine whether the upgrade is still running; a dropped SSH connection does not prove that it stopped. If it has stopped and Debian still reaches a shell, inspect package state and logs before using APT or dpkg to complete the repair. If the server will not boot or bring up networking, use console access and rescue media to investigate the installed system instead.

The Debian release-note links below describe an upgrade from Debian 12 (bookworm) to Debian 13 (trixie). Match package sources, commands, and recovery guidance to the server’s actual release and intended upgrade path; do not apply trixie-specific instructions blindly to an older or mixed-release installation.

Before repairing anything, check whether the upgrade is still active

An SSH disconnect can leave a package operation running on the server. Reconnect, or reattach to the terminal session if you started the upgrade in screen or tmux, and check for active APT or dpkg work before starting another package operation. If you cannot establish whether it is still running, avoid rebooting or launching a second upgrade simply because the terminal disappeared.

If the host is unreachable, use its provider console, serial console, or local access to find out whether it is still booting or whether networking failed. Debian recommends remote serial-terminal access for SSH upgrades because a reboot or accidental restart during the process may require console recovery. For future remote upgrades, run the session in screen or tmux so a temporary network interruption does not end your terminal session. See Debian’s upgrade and recovery guidance.

If Debian boots to a shell, inspect package state and logs

Record the error that stopped the upgrade and inspect what dpkg considers incomplete before attempting a repair:

dpkg --audit

Review the APT and dpkg logs for the last packages downloaded, unpacked, or configured. The most useful files are /var/log/apt/history.log, /var/log/apt/term.log, and /var/log/dpkg.log. Together, they can help distinguish an interrupted configuration from a failed download, an attempted removal, or another error. Debian documents these logs in its release notes.

Also verify that the APT source configuration matches the Debian release you intend to run. A package repair against mismatched or mixed-release sources can propose changes unrelated to the interrupted operation. Do not edit sources or resume an upgrade until you know which release the server is on and which release it is meant to reach.

How to repair broken packages after an upgrade

If Debian is bootable and the package database indicates incomplete configuration or missing dependencies, Debian Reference describes this ordinary repair sequence:

  1. Ask APT to resolve broken dependencies:

    apt --fix-broken install
  2. Review the proposed package actions before confirming. Stop if APT proposes removals or broad changes you do not understand; check the configured sources and logs first.

  3. After dependency repair, configure unpacked or partially configured packages:

    dpkg --configure -a
  4. Recheck package state with dpkg --audit and review any new errors before deciding what to do next.

These commands are for a system that can boot and run package tools. They are not a substitute for diagnosing a machine that cannot reach a shell. Debian Reference documents the sequence in its package-management and recovery guidance.

If the server will not boot or networking does not return

Use Debian Installer rescue mode as the normal emergency route. If that does not work, boot a rescue or live image, identify and mount the installed system’s root filesystem, and use chroot to inspect it. A bootable USB drive is one possible way to provide rescue media; the right medium depends on the server and its access arrangements.

Debian’s release notes state: “For emergency recovery we generally recommend using the rescue mode of the trixie Debian Installer.” This is version-specific guidance, not a universal set of mount commands. The steps for reaching the installed root depend on the machine’s architecture, partition layout, encryption, RAID, and boot configuration. Confirm the target filesystem carefully before making changes; a rescue environment must be able to access the installed system’s storage.

For an initramfs failure

Use the initramfs shell and boot messages to investigate whether the expected root device is available. Debian’s release notes point to checking device nodes under /dev, loaded modules, dmesg, and whether the detected root device matches $ROOT. A mismatch or missing device can explain why the system cannot mount its root filesystem, but the cause still needs to be corrected before normal boot will succeed.

For a systemd boot failure

As a diagnostic route, add systemd.unit=rescue.target or systemd.unit=emergency.target to the kernel command line to request a recovery shell. Emergency mode may require remounting / read-write before changes can be made. These targets help reach a shell; they do not by themselves repair the underlying boot problem. See Debian’s recovery notes.

Check disk space before retrying package work

Check free space on the filesystems used by /var and the target system, particularly where APT stores downloaded archives. Debian warns that insufficient space can leave an upgrade incomplete and difficult to recover. Its release notes describe cleaning downloaded archives or temporarily placing /var/cache/apt/archives on another filesystem. Do not use NFS as an upgrade dependency: a network interruption can make the cache unavailable during the upgrade. See the space guidance in the Debian stable release notes.

Before freeing or relocating space, establish what is consuming it and whether package operations are still active. Preserve important data before risky repair work. Avoid deleting files simply to make an upgrade command proceed if you have not identified their purpose.

When to stop repairing and consider reinstalling

Do not blindly repeat apt full-upgrade, accept extensive removals, force dependency changes, or copy package files from a different Debian release. Those actions can make a damaged or inconsistent installation harder to recover. Use the logs, current package state, configured sources, and storage condition to decide whether another repair attempt is safe.

If the package database is corrupt, essential system files are missing, or the system remains seriously broken after ordinary repair, preserve a backup and consider a clean installation. Debian Reference notes that, for serious breakage, backing up and reinstalling can be more effective than continuing to repair the installation.
