You can’t install macOS apps directly on a Chromebook. For software, use a web or ChromeOS-compatible alternative—or connect remotely to a Mac that runs the app. For files, open iCloud Drive at iCloud.com, use cloud storage, or transfer them with an external drive in a Chromebook-supported format.
Can you install Mac apps on a Chromebook?
No. ChromeOS does not provide a documented way to install macOS applications. A Mac app does not become a Chromebook app just because both devices can run Chrome. Google describes Chromebook workflows as using web apps and compatible apps rather than software programs made for other computers; see Google’s Chromebook migration guide.
Choose a replacement based on what the app does and what your Chromebook supports. Some models can install Android apps from Google Play, and some support a Linux development environment. Availability varies by device, and a school or work administrator may restrict Linux. Google also notes that Linux has hardware limitations, including some cameras and hardware acceleration. Check compatibility for the exact app and Chromebook before relying on it.
- Web app: Look for the app’s browser-based version first.
- Android app: Check whether your Chromebook supports Google Play and whether the app is available for it. See Google’s Android app instructions.
- Linux app: Consider this route for development tools or other compatible software, if Linux is available on your device. See Google’s Linux setup guide.
- Mac-only app: Use the app on a Mac and connect to that computer remotely.
How to use a Mac-only app remotely
Chrome Remote Desktop lets you access another computer’s applications and files. Set it up on the Mac, then connect to that Mac from the Chromebook using Chrome Remote Desktop, following Google’s setup instructions. The Mac must be available and configured for remote access. This runs the app on the Mac; it does not install or convert the app for ChromeOS.

How to open iCloud Drive on a Chromebook
- Open Chrome and go to iCloud.com.
- Sign in with the Apple Account associated with your iCloud files.
- Open Drive or iCloud Drive.
- Use the browser interface to view, upload, download, organize, share, or delete files.
Apple documents file management through iCloud.com, but feature availability can vary by account and browser. Check Apple’s iCloud Drive web instructions and web-only iCloud access requirements if a particular feature matters. Browser access does not establish that iCloud Drive will appear as a synchronized folder in the Chromebook Files app, or that all Mac data will be copied locally.
How to transfer files with an external drive
A USB storage device can move files between a Mac and Chromebook, provided the Chromebook can read the drive’s file system and the device connects to the Chromebook. Google lists FAT, FAT32, and exFAT as supported file systems; journaled HFS+ is read-only. See Google’s file-system and external-device compatibility list.

- Connect the external drive to the Chromebook.
- Check that ChromeOS can read—and, if needed, write—the drive’s format.
- For a documented read-and-write option, use a drive formatted as exFAT, FAT, or FAT32. Do not expect to write to a journaled HFS+ drive.
- Copy the files, then eject the drive safely before disconnecting it.
If the drive is in a format the Chromebook cannot write to, use a cloud transfer or another supported drive rather than assuming the files can be changed in place.
How to move files through cloud storage
Cloud storage avoids carrying a drive, but it requires network access for the cloud workflow and access to the relevant account and files. Google lists Google Drive, Box, and SMB among Chromebook cloud-file options in its Chromebook switching guide. You can also upload files to Google Drive from another computer and open them on the Chromebook. Choose a service you can access from both devices, and make sure its sharing permissions allow the Chromebook account to reach the files.

How to edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files
Google documents two cloud-based routes for opening and editing Office files on a Chromebook: Microsoft 365 connected to OneDrive, or Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connected to Google Drive. These documented editing routes require cloud storage and are unavailable offline. Follow Google’s instructions for opening and editing Office files.

| What you need | Route | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Run an app that only works on macOS | Chrome Remote Desktop to a configured Mac | Requires a separate Mac set up for remote access. |
| Replace an app | Use a web app, or check Android and Linux compatibility | Availability depends on the Chromebook model and, for managed devices, administrator policy. |
| Open iCloud files | Sign in at iCloud.com and open iCloud Drive | Web features can vary; this is browser access, not proof of local synchronization. |
| Transfer files without a network | Use external storage in a supported format | Journaled HFS+ is read-only on Chromebooks; check the drive and port compatibility. |
| Move files through the cloud | Use Google Drive, Box, SMB, or another accessible service | Requires network access and suitable account permissions. |
| Edit Office documents | Use Microsoft 365 with OneDrive or Google editors with Google Drive | Google’s documented cloud-editing routes are unavailable offline. |
The deciding questions are whether the app must run on the Chromebook itself, whether your model and administrator allow the relevant apps, whether you have internet access, and whether you need to edit files or only view them.
