If a Minecraft snapshot won’t appear, install, or launch, first confirm you’re using Minecraft: Java Edition and enable snapshots in the official Launcher’s Installations tab. If the game crashes after you click Play, test the same version in a fresh Java installation before changing system settings. Back up important worlds or use a separate game folder before opening them in a snapshot: Mojang warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds.
Make sure you’re installing a Java snapshot
Snapshots are testing versions for Minecraft: Java Edition; the snapshot-installation instructions do not apply to Bedrock Edition. In the official Launcher, open Installations and enable snapshots, then create an installation or select one for the intended snapshot version. Mojang’s instructions are in its snapshot guide.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open Installations and enable snapshots.
- Create a new installation or edit an existing one, then choose the snapshot you want to run.
- Save the installation and launch it from the Launcher.
If the snapshot still does not show in the version list, confirm snapshots are enabled in Installations and that you are looking at a Java Edition installation.
Protect your worlds before opening a snapshot
Do not use an important main-world save as your first test. Make a separate backup, and consider setting the snapshot installation to use a different game folder from your regular worlds. Mojang explicitly cautions that testing versions can corrupt worlds in its snapshot instructions.

Separate launcher or account problems from a snapshot problem
Notice where the failure occurs. If the Launcher will not open or update, start with its update and installation guidance. If it opens but reports that you cannot access or install the game, verify that you are signed into the Microsoft account that owns the Minecraft license. Minecraft Help advises checking the account across the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app.
- Launcher will not update on Windows: Check the Microsoft Store Library for a Launcher update, as described on the official Minecraft download page.
- License or sign-in problem: Check that the correct licensed Microsoft account is active in the Launcher and, where relevant, the Microsoft Store and Xbox app. See Minecraft Launcher troubleshooting.
- Launcher files appear to be failing: Minecraft Help includes reinstalling the Launcher as a way to refresh its files. This is more relevant when the Launcher itself is broken than when only one snapshot fails.
A sign-in or license error is different from a game that downloads but crashes at launch; use the next checks for the latter.

Test a clean Java installation if Play crashes
Minecraft Help recommends creating a fresh Java installation to troubleshoot crashes when launching from the Launcher. Use the same game version as the one that fails. If the clean installation launches, compare the original installation’s downloaded mods and advanced settings—such as resolution and JVM arguments—with the defaults.
- Sign in to the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open Installations, then choose New installation.
- Give the installation a name and select the same game version you are testing.
- Save it, install or launch that version, and see whether it opens.
- If the clean installation works, review the original installation’s mods and advanced settings rather than changing unrelated system settings first.
This test is intended to isolate launcher crashes when selecting Play; it does not show that every failed download or installation is caused by mods, JVM arguments, or a damaged profile. See Minecraft Help’s guide to creating a new Java installation.

Check the exact snapshot’s release notes
If other versions launch but one snapshot does not, check the official notes for that exact build before changing settings. Snapshot-specific bugs can prevent the game from opening. For example, Mojang’s notes for Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 2, published April 9, 2026, listed a crash before the game opened and a Vulkan issue that prevented opening on some GPUs. That is an example tied to that snapshot, not evidence that another build or GPU has the same defect.
If the notes identify a known issue, follow Mojang’s stated workaround or try a later fixed snapshot when one is available. If the failure appears to be a reproducible game bug, use the official issue tracker linked from the snapshot release notes.

Choose the next step based on what fails

If these checks do not identify the cause, the exact error message and the game’s latest.log or crash report are useful diagnostic details. Without those details, it is not possible to distinguish reliably between a launcher, account, installation, or version-specific failure.
Reinstall the Launcher only when the Launcher itself is failing
Minecraft Help lists uninstalling and reinstalling the Launcher as a general troubleshooting step to refresh necessary files. Use it when the Launcher itself will not work, rather than as the first response to one snapshot failing while other versions launch. Keep world backups safe, and do not delete the entire game-data folder as a generic first fix. See the official Launcher troubleshooting page and Minecraft download page.
