Windows, macOS, and Android use available memory to keep data and apps ready for reuse; forcing that data out can mean slower reloads. If a device feels slow, first check for sustained memory pressure and identify the app or workload responsible.
What RAM cache does—and why clearing it may not help
Operating systems use memory for data that may be needed again. Windows keeps file data in a system cache, macOS manages memory for active work and reusable data, and Android keeps background processes cached so you can return to them more quickly. This is normal behavior, not by itself evidence of a fault.
Clearing cached data can force later reads or app launches to load it again. That may add work rather than improve performance. Microsoft explains that Windows’ Cache Manager operates continuously and that flushed pages can remain on the standby list, where they are part of available memory. Apple likewise notes that unused memory does not necessarily make a Mac faster.
Check whether memory pressure is actually the problem
Windows
Use Windows’ built-in process and performance views to look for an app or workload that is persistently consuming memory while the slowdown occurs. A high cache figure alone is not a reason to empty it: Windows manages cached file data continuously, and the cited Microsoft guidance does not prescribe a consumer procedure for manually emptying standby memory. Avoid treating a third-party cache cleaner as necessary.

macOS
- Open Activity Monitor and select the Memory pane.
- Review memory use, compressed memory, and swapping between RAM and the startup disk. Check whether an app is using unusually large amounts of memory.
- Read the Memory Pressure graph. Green indicates efficient memory use; yellow can indicate a possible future need for more RAM; red indicates a need for more RAM. If pressure is elevated or spiking, quit an app you do not need and see whether pressure improves.
Apple Support’s Activity Monitor User Guide explains these indicators and cautions: “When you have free or unused memory, your computer performance does not necessarily improve.”
Android
Android normally retains background processes in a cache so you can switch back to them faster. When system resources run low, Android can terminate cached processes to free memory. Ordinary cached-process behavior is therefore not, by itself, a sign that the phone needs a cache-clearing fix. If the phone is slow, look for a consistently problematic app or workload rather than trying to empty the system cache.

What to do on each platform

Why Android’s cache-dropping command is not a consumer fix
Android Developers documents the drop_caches command as part of a controlled exercise for measuring cold starts and page-cache behavior. The procedure requires a userdebug build with root access. It is a developer testing tool, not a recommended performance tweak for an everyday phone. Rooting a device or running a privileged diagnostic command is not warranted just because Android has cached processes.

When to investigate an app, or consider more RAM
If memory pressure remains high, check whether the same app or workload repeatedly consumes memory. Microsoft’s app-development guidance notes that dynamic memory use is a common significant source of app memory use and where leaks manifest; one snapshot alone does not establish a leak. On a Mac, Apple recommends checking for a memory-intensive app when pressure is elevated.
Consider a hardware upgrade only after diagnosing persistent capacity pressure and confirming that your exact device supports it. On a Mac, open System Information and check for Upgradeable Memory; if the relevant pane is absent, upgradeable memory is not available for that Mac. Compatibility depends on the model. Adding RAM increases capacity; it is not the same as clearing cache.
