Then follow the computer’s manual to open it, fit the drive without force, and connect it correctly. Desktop secondary drives need both SATA data and SATA power; laptop replacement steps and mounting hardware vary by model.
Check that your computer supports a 2.5-inch SATA SSD
This guide is for a compatible 2.5-inch SATA drive. It does not mean every desktop or laptop has a replaceable SATA bay. Before buying or opening the computer, check the exact model’s owner manual for the supported drive size and interface, bay location, access instructions, battery handling, and required mounting hardware. Crucial’s desktop installation guide and laptop installation guide also emphasize checking fit and system-specific instructions.

- Confirm the system accepts a 2.5-inch SATA SSD and has a compatible bay or connector.
- For a desktop, check whether the case has a 2.5-inch mount. A 3.5-inch bay may need a 2.5-inch-to-3.5-inch mounting bracket.
- For a laptop, check whether the drive is replaceable and whether its thickness, connector, bracket, spacer, or other support hardware must match the original drive.
- Back up important files before replacing a working boot drive.
How do I install a SATA SSD in a PC?
There are two common paths: replace the existing drive, or add the SSD as a secondary drive. The first may require transferring the operating system and files; the second adds storage if the computer has an available compatible bay and connections.
Choose whether to clone or install the operating system fresh
If you want to keep the current installation, cloning is an optional preparation step to do before removing the old drive. Crucial describes connecting the new SSD with a SATA-to-USB connection and cloning the old drive in its 2.5-inch SSD installation guide. The cloning software and process depend on your operating system and current vendor support; check the software provider’s current documentation rather than assuming a particular utility is available or suitable.

- INDUSTRY DEFINING RELIABILITY: Meet the demands of every task from everyday computing to 8K video processing, with up to 2,400 TBW
- MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: 870 EVO has been compatibility tested for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices. Interface- SATA 6GB/s, compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s interfaces
If you do not need to preserve the existing installation, you can install the drive and set up the operating system separately. Follow the OS and computer manufacturer’s instructions for that process.
Prepare safely
- Shut down the computer and disconnect its power cable. For a laptop, follow the owner manual’s instructions about disconnecting or removing the battery; remove it only if the model’s instructions call for that.
- Press the desktop’s power button after unplugging it to discharge residual electricity. Ground yourself by touching unpainted metal on the case or use an ESD wrist strap before handling internal parts.
- Use the computer manual to remove the case panel or laptop cover and locate the drive bay. Keep track of screws and any drive-specific hardware.
How do I install a 2.5-inch SSD in a desktop?
Use the desktop manual for case access and bay location. Handle the SSD by its sides, avoid touching its connectors, and do not force it into a mount or connector.

- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
- Fit the SSD into a suitable 2.5-inch mount. If the available bay is 3.5 inches and has no 2.5-inch mounting points, use a compatible mounting bracket. Reuse the computer’s existing mounting hardware where appropriate.
- For a secondary drive, connect a SATA data cable from the SSD to an available SATA connector on the motherboard.
- Connect a SATA power lead from the power supply to the SSD. A secondary SATA drive needs both the data and power connections.
- If replacing a drive, use the system’s existing cable and mounting hardware when they are compatible. Seat the SSD gently; do not force the connector or drive into place.
- Reassemble the computer, reconnect power, and start it.
Crucial’s desktop SSD instructions cover the SATA data and power connections and the possible need for a bay converter. If the computer manual specifies different or proprietary mounting parts, follow that guidance.
Can I add a SATA SSD to my laptop?
Only if the specific laptop supports a replaceable 2.5-inch SATA drive and has the required bay and connector. Laptop interiors and drive assemblies vary, so do not use a generic opening procedure in place of the model’s manual.

- Shut down and unplug the laptop. Follow the manual’s battery instructions, then discharge residual power and ground yourself before touching internal components.
- Open the laptop only as described in its manual. Remove the existing drive according to the model’s instructions.
- Transfer any required bracket, adapter, support frame, brace, pull tab, or screws from the old drive to the SSD. Some models may also need a spacer to match the old drive’s thickness; others do not.
- Connect and seat the SSD gently. Do not force the drive or handle its connector contacts.
- Reassemble the laptop and power it on.
Crucial’s laptop installation guide recommends checking the laptop manual for access and fit details and preserving necessary mounting parts.
What cables do I need to install a SATA SSD?
For a desktop secondary drive, you need a SATA data cable between the SSD and motherboard, plus a SATA power connection from the power supply. If you are replacing an existing desktop drive, the computer may already have compatible cables and mounting hardware. A laptop replacement typically uses the laptop’s internal connector rather than the desktop cable arrangement, but the exact setup is model-specific. For cloning before installation, Crucial’s guide describes a SATA-to-USB connection.

Set up or check the SSD after installation
After booting, check whether the computer recognizes the SSD. If it is a secondary drive and appears in the operating system but is not available for file storage, it may need initialization using that operating system’s disk-management tools. Use the OS’s current instructions for initialization; this is separate from physically installing the drive.
Why is my new SSD not showing up?
Work through the physical and software checks before assuming the SSD is faulty. Crucial’s SSD recognition troubleshooting guidance includes checking connections, initialization, and firmware settings. These are general starting points, not a model-specific diagnosis.

- Check the fit and connections: shut down and disconnect power before reopening the computer. Confirm the SSD is seated correctly, the SATA data and power connections are secure on a desktop, and the drive is not obstructed by a missing bracket or spacer.
- Check operating-system setup: if the SSD is a secondary drive, see whether it needs initialization in the OS.
- Check firmware settings: consult the computer manufacturer’s current BIOS or firmware guidance for drive recognition checks.
- Test the drive elsewhere if practical: another compatible system can help distinguish a drive issue from a computer connection or configuration issue.
- Consult current firmware guidance: check the computer and SSD manufacturers’ instructions before changing firmware or BIOS settings.
