To reduce unnecessary memory pressure in Windows 11, first identify which apps or workloads coincide with slowdowns, then trim only the startup and background activity you do not need. High RAM use alone is not proof of a problem, and disabling Windows services or security features is not a safe routine fix.
Check what is using memory before changing settings
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. On the Processes page, review the Memory column for apps that are using a lot of RAM. Select Performance to see overall memory use alongside other resource activity. Microsoft recommends reviewing resource-heavy processes when diagnosing a slow PC: Microsoft’s Windows 11 performance guidance.
Look for a pattern: does the slowdown begin when a particular app opens, when many browser tabs are active, or only during a demanding task? Close a nonessential app as a temporary test and see whether responsiveness improves. Avoid ending unfamiliar processes; their names may not make their purpose obvious, and stopping them can disrupt Windows or another app.
Memory use varies with what the PC is doing. Use the slowdown and the workload as context rather than aiming for an arbitrary low number in Task Manager.

Stop only unneeded apps from launching at sign-in
Startup controls affect which apps open automatically when you sign in; they do not uninstall those apps. Find the controls in either place:
- Settings: Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Task Manager: Startup apps.
Task Manager shows a startup-impact label. Microsoft defines “High Impact” as more than 1 second of total CPU usage or more than 3 MB of total disk usage during startup. This is a measure of startup impact—not how much memory an app currently uses. See Microsoft’s guide to configuring startup applications.

Disable an entry only if you recognize it and do not need it to open automatically. You can still launch a disabled startup app yourself when needed. Change one or two entries, then use the PC normally to check whether sign-in or later performance improves.
Limit background activity only when the app supports it
For supported apps, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage, find the app, select its options, and choose Manage background activity. Not every app offers this setting. Microsoft explains the available choices in its background activity guidance.

- Power optimized (recommended): Windows manages background activity while allowing periodic updates or notifications.
- Never: The app cannot run in the background while inactive, so its background notifications and updates will stop.
- Always: Use this when an app needs to keep working in the background, such as for timely syncing or notifications.
Choose “Never” only for an app whose background updates and alerts you can do without. If you rely on them, leave the app on “Power optimized” or “Always,” according to your needs.
Reduce the active workload, then restart if needed
Close applications and browser tabs you are not using. If the PC remains slow, save your work, restart Windows, and reopen only what you need. Microsoft recommends these steps as part of its PC performance guidance.

After each change, test the workload that normally causes the slowdown. If the problem appears only with a demanding app or many open tabs, focus on that workload; if the PC is sluggish even during light use, continue diagnosing rather than making broad system changes.

Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum RAM requirement for Windows 11 in its Windows 11 system requirements. Its computer memory guidance recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term and says 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance work. These are broad recommendations, not a guarantee that an upgrade will resolve a particular slowdown.

If Task Manager shows that memory pressure persists during your normal workload after unnecessary activity is reduced, check the PC maker’s guidance for your exact model before considering an upgrade. Some computers cannot be upgraded, and supported memory depends on the model.
Do not disable Windows services, security features, or core system components to make the memory figure look smaller. The built-in steps above target app activity while preserving essential Windows functions.
