How to choose between a portable projector and a TV
Start with the conditions in the room, not a headline brightness figure or screen-size promise. Compare the options across these practical factors:

When a portable projector makes sense
Consider a portable projector if a large image and the ability to move or store the device matter more than effortless daily use, and you can dim the room and provide an appropriate surface and placement distance. A smooth, light-colored wall may work; a dedicated screen can provide a more suitable projection surface. [LG]
The projector’s throw ratio and distance determine the image size it can produce from a given position. Short-throw models can suit rooms without much distance between the projector and screen; standard-throw models need more placement distance. What brightness figures can—and cannot—tell you
Samsung UK suggests 1,500–2,500 lumens for a controlled-light home theater and 3,000 or more where large windows affect viewing. These are broad manufacturer buying guidelines, not guaranteed thresholds. The right result also depends on the projector, image size, screen surface, actual light level, and the brightness measurement standard. [Samsung UK]
Do not assume lumen figures measured or reported under different standards are directly comparable. Check the stated measurement standard and consider the room’s real light and intended image size; a higher number alone is not proof that projection will look good in a bright space.

Check the room before buying a projector
- Measure placement distance and target image width. Compare the available distance with the exact projector’s throw specifications or manufacturer calculator. [LG India]
