To verify an L2 withdrawal, start with its initiating transaction hash on the source network’s explorer, then follow the bridge message and confirm any required proof, finalization, or claim on the destination chain. A successful L2 transaction means the withdrawal was included on L2; it does not, by itself, show that the destination-side withdrawal is complete.

What you need before checking

Have the initiating transaction hash and confirm the details of the withdrawal you intended to make. Do not assume the token symbol identifies the destination or the bridge flow.

  • Source Layer 2 network
  • Intended destination network, usually L1
  • Token and amount
  • Recipient address
  • Initiating L2 transaction hash

How to verify the withdrawal

  1. Check the initiating transaction on the source L2 explorer. Open the explorer for the network where you started the withdrawal and search the L2 transaction hash. Verify that it is on the expected network, then inspect the receipt or result, sender, bridge target or contract, token or value, and timestamp. A successful receipt confirms inclusion on that L2, not completion on the destination. See the OP Stack withdrawal specification and ZKsync bridging documentation.
  2. Look up the withdrawal in the bridge’s status or transaction history. If the bridge provides a message-status tool or transaction history, search using the initiating L2 hash. For Arbitrum L2-to-L1 messages, the official FAQ specifically directs users to use the L2 transaction hash and search bridge transaction history; that history can also be used to claim withdrawals. See Arbitrum’s withdrawals FAQ.
  3. Check for required destination-chain transactions. Depending on the network, the process may require a proof or prove transaction and then a finalization or claim transaction on L1. Search the destination explorer for transactions associated with the withdrawal and open their receipts. Where the flow requires finalization, confirm it succeeded and check the resulting transfer or event for the intended recipient and asset.
  4. Confirm the destination outcome. Verify that the destination transaction is on the correct network and that its receipt and resulting asset movement match the recipient and token you intended. Do not treat an L2 success receipt or a bridge status label alone as proof that funds reached the destination.

How the process differs by network

The hash that starts the lookup is usually the L2 withdrawal transaction, but the bridge’s status view and destination-side steps vary. Follow the official instructions for the particular network rather than applying another chain’s stages or timing.

Network or flow Where to begin Stages to check Timing and completion evidence
OP Stack networks Initiating L2 withdrawal transaction; follow its linked message through the bridge flow. The specification distinguishes L2 initiation, an L1 proving transaction, and an L1 finalizing transaction. The OP Stack specification describes a seven-day challenge period after proving before an eligible finalization transaction. Treat this as the documented OP Stack flow, not a universal L2 withdrawal timer. Check the specific network’s official bridge guidance and verify successful L1 finalization and the destination outcome.
Arbitrum L2-to-L1 Initiating L2 transaction hash, as specified by the official FAQ. Find the cross-chain message in Arbitrum bridge transaction history; use that history to track and, where applicable, claim the withdrawal. The FAQ directs users to bridge history and does not establish a universal wait time. Confirm the claim or destination-side result for the withdrawal.
ZKsync L2 withdrawal request and its associated message. The request must be executed before the user finalizes it on L1 with a withdrawal proof. ZKsync documents an execution delay; actual finalization timing depends on network activity and proof generation. Check the L1 finalization and resulting destination transfer.

What withdrawal status labels mean

Labels such as “included,” “proven,” “ready to finalize,” and “finalized” can refer to different stages in a bridge flow. Their exact meaning depends on the network and bridge; use that network’s current official instructions to interpret them. A transaction explorer can show a transaction and its receipt, while a bridge history may be needed to follow cross-chain message progress. For example, the Arbitrum FAQ points users to bridge transaction history for L2-to-L1 messages, and the OP Stack specification separates proving from finalizing.

Why the withdrawal may not appear on Etherscan

If the expected transfer is missing from Etherscan, check the path and stage before concluding the withdrawal failed.

  • Wrong destination or recipient: Confirm that you are viewing the intended destination network and the address entered for the withdrawal.
  • Still in progress: The L2 transaction may have succeeded while the bridge is waiting for execution, proving, finalization, or a claim step required by that network.
  • Source transaction reverted: Recheck the L2 receipt. A reverted initiation will not produce the expected completed withdrawal.
  • Destination transaction not yet visible: Some flows require a separate destination-side transaction. Check the bridge’s status history for the linked message and any available next step.
  • Network-specific delay: For ZKsync, documented reasons an L1 record may not yet appear include confirmation delay; actual finalization timing depends on network activity and proof generation. Its documentation also lists reverted transactions and an incorrect destination address as possible causes.

ZKsync’s transaction lifecycle documentation describes these possible explanations. For any network, use its official bridge guidance to establish which stage is pending and what action, if any, is required.

When to consider the withdrawal complete

Use the destination-side evidence required by the bridge: a successful L1 finalization or claim transaction where applicable, plus the resulting transfer or event showing the intended asset and recipient. If you have only a successful initiating L2 receipt, you have verified the start of the withdrawal—not its completion on the destination chain.
