It is a less compelling purchase if you are happy with a standard PS5 or need to keep spending down—especially if you also need to buy a disc drive. The improvements are selective and vary by game, so the right choice depends on what you play and the total price in your region.
What does the PS5 Pro cost in 2026?
Sony’s recommended retail prices, effective April 2, 2026 and checked October 7, 2026, are listed below. They are official reference prices, not guaranteed current retailer prices; check local listings before buying. Sony advises customers in other territories to check local retailers or PlayStation Direct where available.

For a US price comparison only, Sony’s same announcement lists the standard PS5 at $649.99 and the PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99. That makes the Pro $250 more than the standard disc-edition PS5, or $300 more than the Digital Edition, before tax and accessories. Those differences should not be applied to other regions.
Sony said it raised prices because of “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” That is Sony’s stated explanation for the April 2026 increases, not an independent assessment of the market.

What do you get for the premium?
The PS5 Pro’s hardware is designed to improve graphics and performance, but Sony’s headline figures describe capability rather than a guaranteed gain in every game. In its 2024 launch announcement, Sony said the Pro has 67% more GPU Compute Units than the then-current PS5, memory that is 28% faster, and rendering that is “up to 45 percent faster.” The “up to” figure is Sony’s maximum claim, not a typical or independently measured result across games.
- Sharper images: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s machine-learning-based upscaling technology.
- More advanced ray tracing: Supported games can use more detailed lighting and reflections, though the effect depends on the title.
- More storage: The Pro includes a 2TB SSD.
- Newer wireless capability: Sony lists Wi-Fi 7 support in territories where that standard is supported.
- Existing game compatibility: The Pro plays PS5 games and shares the same multiplayer community. Sony said Game Boost can apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games; enhanced image quality is available for select PS4 games. Sony’s current US product listing notes that a small number of PS4 games are not compatible.
Sony positions the console as a way for dedicated players and game creators to take the PS5 experience further. That is the manufacturer’s framing; whether the improvement justifies the cost depends on the games and display you use.
How much difference will you see in your games?
Only select games receive PS5 Pro enhancements, and the features and results vary by title. Sony’s launch announcement named Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered as examples. This is an announcement-era sample, not a complete or current compatibility list. Check Sony’s current enhanced-games listing and confirm support for the games you actually play.
A large catalog of enhanced titles is not by itself a reason to upgrade: the value comes from improvements in the games you regularly play. If your favorites do not benefit, the hardware’s headline specifications may have little practical effect on your experience.

The Pro is aimed at players seeking sharper image clarity on a 4K display and higher frame rates where games support them. Sony’s US product listing advertises up to 120fps with 4K output. This is a capability claim, not a promise that every game runs at 120 frames per second or at that rate while outputting 4K; actual modes depend on the game.

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
If you already have a suitable 4K display, you can assess the Pro on its own merits without assuming you need a new TV. If your display does not make the image or frame-rate improvements valuable to you, the extra hardware may be harder to justify.

Disc drive for physical games and movies
The PS5 Pro is sold as an all-digital console. Sony’s US PlayStation Direct listing includes the console, DualSense controller, 2TB SSD, horizontal stand feet, HDMI cable, power cord, manual, and pre-installed Astro’s Playroom. The detachable disc drive is sold separately. If you want to play physical PS5 or PS4 games, or Blu-ray discs, include the compatible drive’s local price in your comparison. Sony says internet access is required to pair the drive with the Pro during setup.
Vertical stand and older accessories
The vertical stand is also sold separately, but the console includes horizontal stand feet, making the stand an optional convenience. Sony’s compatibility guide marks both the detachable disc drive and vertical stand as compatible with the Pro. It marks PS5 CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 console covers and the PS5 console base as not compatible, so check accessory compatibility rather than assuming older parts will fit.
Should you buy a PS5 Pro or a regular PS5?
Use these questions to make the choice based on your situation:
Quick Recap
- Compare the full local price. Check current retailer prices for the Pro and standard PS5, then add the disc drive if you need physical media. Sony’s recommended price is a reference point, not a retailer quote.
- Check your regular games. Look for Pro enhancements in the titles you play most. Support is selective, and a title’s benefits vary.
- Consider your display and priorities. A suitable 4K screen and an interest in sharper images or higher frame rates make the Pro’s features more relevant. Do not treat an advertised maximum frame rate as a guarantee for every game.
- Factor in physical media. The Pro is digital-only as sold. Add the cost of the compatible detachable drive if discs are part of your library or movie setup.
- If you already own a PS5, weigh the upgrade against what you will use. Consider the specific games and display benefits you expect, rather than assuming a working console needs replacing.
Who is the PS5 Pro best for?
- Consider buying it if you value improved presentation and performance, play games with Pro-specific enhancements, use a suitable 4K display, and are comfortable with the price.
- Stick with a standard PS5 if you are satisfied with your current experience, the Pro’s enhanced games are not your priority, or the price difference matters more than the potential improvements.
- Recalculate the total if you want physical games or Blu-ray playback: the separately sold disc drive adds to the Pro’s cost.
