If a Layer 2 transaction or withdrawal appears stuck, first check the network’s official status page and the transaction’s status on its official bridge history or explorer. A sequencer outage, a bridge-interface problem, and a wallet’s RPC connection failure are different issues, and they call for different responses. Do not submit a replacement transaction until you know whether the original was accepted.

Recovery options depend on the chain. Arbitrum documents a way to bypass its sequencer through the DelayedInbox after a waiting period; that is not a universal Layer 2 procedure. Other chains may have different withdrawal and finalization steps.

Is the Layer 2 network down, or is one service unreachable?

Check the affected chain’s official status page and look at individual components rather than relying only on an overall “operational” label. A status page may report deposits, withdrawals, transaction sequencing, batch submission, and node synchronization separately. A bridge interface can be unavailable while an onchain message remains pending, and an RPC endpoint can fail even while the chain continues producing blocks.

As dated examples, Base’s status page showed its listed mainnet services operational and no incidents for October 5, 2026. At access time on October 7, 2026, Optimism’s status page showed its listed components operational and no notices during the previous seven days. These are snapshots, not guarantees about an individual transaction, wallet, or RPC provider.

Check for an RPC or wallet connection problem

Try the chain’s official guidance for a supported alternate RPC only if the evidence points to an endpoint problem—for example, your wallet cannot connect while the network status page reports sequencing as operational. An alternate RPC may restore access to a functioning chain; it cannot restart a stopped sequencer or bridge.

Arbitrum distinguishes its general-purpose public RPC from its direct sequencer endpoint. Its documentation says the public RPC has no uptime, latency, or rate-limit guarantees and recommends third-party node infrastructure or a self-hosted node for applications that depend on availability. That advice concerns endpoint reliability, not a workaround for a network-wide outage.

How do you check whether a transaction or withdrawal is stuck?

  1. Keep the original transaction hash. Do not discard it or sign a replacement just because a wallet or bridge page is slow.
  2. Open the affected chain’s official bridge history or explorer. Search for the transaction or message using the hash for the chain where you initiated it.
  3. Use the correct initiating hash for Arbitrum messages. Arbitrum’s FAQ says to use the L1 initiating transaction hash for an L1-to-L2 message, and the L2 initiating transaction hash for an L2-to-L1 withdrawal.
  4. Follow the status shown for that message. Arbitrum’s bridge history can show a message’s status and provide a way to claim a withdrawal. Retryable tickets have a separate redemption tool. Use the current official instructions for the specific message state.

A missing ordinary wallet-to-wallet transaction does not necessarily mean a withdrawal has failed. ZKsync says withdrawals are generally internal transactions managed through BridgeHub; check the explorer’s Internal Transactions section when looking for one.

When should you retry—and when should you wait?

Retry only when the error is transient and the network’s documentation says the transaction was not accepted. Arbitrum’s chain information says network or connection errors, and a sequencer error of context deadline exceeded, can be retried with backoff because the transaction was not accepted in that case.

Do not blindly repeat a transaction after a terminal error. Arbitrum identifies errors such as nonce too low and contract reverts as cases that should not be retried without addressing the underlying issue. Before signing a replacement, check the original transaction’s status in the explorer or bridge history; a slow interface by itself does not establish that the transaction failed.

Can you bypass an offline sequencer?

Only use an L1 escape route if the affected network documents one for your transaction. Arbitrum says users can send a message through its DelayedInbox to bypass the sequencer and force inclusion after a waiting period. Its FAQ described that wait as currently about 24 hours when accessed on October 7, 2026. Treat the estimate as volatile and check Arbitrum’s current official instructions before acting.

Arbitrum describes forced inclusion as a mechanism for rare cases, particularly when the sequencer is expected not to return. Do not apply the DelayedInbox procedure to another L2: the sources cited here do not establish an equivalent forced-inclusion process for other networks, and bridge architecture and recovery steps differ.

How long can an L2 withdrawal take to appear on Ethereum?

A completed L2 transaction and a finalized L1 withdrawal are separate stages. For ZKsync supported chains, the documentation states a three-hour minimum execution delay. It explicitly warns that this does not guarantee L1 finalization within three hours: network activity and proof generation can extend the process. The documentation describes 21 hours as the previous supported-chain delay, not the current minimum.

If the withdrawal is not visible as a normal L1 transfer, check its status using the relevant official bridge or explorer and, for ZKsync, inspect Internal Transactions. Do not infer failure from the absence of an ordinary wallet transfer alone.

Which response fits the problem?

What you observe What to check Reasonable next step What it does not establish
Your wallet cannot connect, but the chain reports sequencing operational Your RPC endpoint and the chain’s official status page If the issue is isolated to the endpoint, use an alternate RPC supported by the chain or your provider. An alternate RPC does not restore a stopped sequencer or bridge. Arbitrum’s public RPC has no uptime, latency, or rate-limit guarantees (Arbitrum Docs).
A transaction has a transient connection or sequencer timeout error The original hash and the chain’s retry guidance For the specific Arbitrum errors its documentation identifies as not accepted, retry with backoff. Do not generalize this guidance to terminal errors such as nonce too low or a contract revert (Arbitrum chain information).
An Arbitrum message is pending, or its normal path is unavailable Arbitrum bridge history, the correct initiating hash, and current DelayedInbox instructions Use the message’s documented claim or redemption path; consider forced inclusion only under Arbitrum’s documented conditions. The FAQ’s approximately 24-hour wait is an Arbitrum-specific, time-sensitive estimate, not a general L2 delay (Arbitrum FAQ, accessed October 7, 2026).
A ZKsync withdrawal is not visible as a standard L1 transfer The ZKsync explorer’s Internal Transactions section and BridgeHub-related status Check the internal transaction and allow for the documented withdrawal process. The three-hour minimum for supported chains does not promise finalization within three hours (ZKsync Docs).
The bridge website is unavailable, but you have an initiating transaction hash The chain’s official explorer, bridge history, and status page Check the onchain message state before deciding whether to wait, claim, redeem, or seek chain-specific support. A website outage alone does not show that the onchain message failed.

How do you avoid making the situation worse?

  • Use official status pages, bridge history, explorers, and protocol documentation for the affected network.
  • Keep the original transaction hash and verify its status before signing another transaction.
  • Do not assume an RPC fallback, retry, or forced-inclusion method on one L2 applies to another.
  • Never share your seed phrase with anyone claiming they can recover funds. A person or service asking for it is not an official transaction-status or recovery route.
