To move tokens from an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) back to Ethereum mainnet, make an L2-to-L1 withdrawal through the network’s supported bridge or a route you have checked. Choose the L2 as the source and Ethereum mainnet as the destination, confirm the token, recipient, amount, and live fees before signing, then follow the bridge’s instructions to wait, prove, finalize, or claim the withdrawal. Timing and steps vary by network: Arbitrum’s official bridge requires at least seven days, while ZKsync documents a three-hour delay before finalization is available.

What you need before withdrawing

  • A wallet connected to the L2 that currently holds the assets.
  • Enough of that network’s gas asset to submit the withdrawal. Arbitrum’s quickstart specifically warns users to have sufficient ETH for transaction costs; if the wallet lacks it, a confirmation prompt may not appear. Arbitrum bridge quickstart
  • The network’s official bridge, or another route whose supported networks, tokens, fees, and trust assumptions you have checked.
  • A supported token and recipient address. The bridge interface must support the token and route you intend to use.

How to withdraw from an L2 to Ethereum mainnet

  1. Identify the source network and token. Check which L2 holds the assets and select the correct supported token entry. If the token is not supported on that bridge or route, do not proceed with it.
  2. Open the bridge and connect your wallet. Verify that the source is the L2 holding your funds and set Ethereum mainnet as the destination.
  3. Enter the amount and review the transaction. Check the token, destination, recipient, estimated amount to receive, and live fees. Ethereum.org’s bridge guide recommends reviewing the amount received and fees before continuing.
  4. Check gas and confirm in your wallet. Keep enough of the L2’s gas asset to initiate the transaction. Read the wallet prompt carefully; do not sign an unexplained transaction or share your seed phrase.
  5. Monitor the withdrawal. Use the bridge’s status information or transaction details to track progress. Depending on the network, you may need to wait for a challenge period or for a message to become provable.
  6. Complete any required finalization or claim. Follow the bridge’s own instructions when the withdrawal becomes eligible. Some exits require a separate action on Ethereum mainnet before the funds arrive.
  7. Verify receipt on mainnet. After the bridge reports completion, switch your wallet to Ethereum mainnet and check the token balance at the intended recipient address.

How long an L2 withdrawal takes

There is no single withdrawal duration for all Ethereum L2 networks. The delay and final steps depend on the network and route. These examples apply to the named networks and their documented withdrawal processes, not to every bridge.

Network or route Documented timing and steps Source
Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova via the official bridge At least seven days to withdraw to Ethereum mainnet. The guide describes a 7–8 day countdown followed by a claim action. Arbitrum bridge quickstart
Optimistic rollups using the OP Stack withdrawal process The specification describes initiating the withdrawal on L2, proving it on L1, then finalizing after a seven-day challenge period. OP Stack withdrawal specification
ZKsync Documentation describes a three-hour delay before L1 finalization is available; finalization involves proving inclusion of the L2-to-L1 message. ZKsync bridging assets documentation

Why Arbitrum withdrawals include a waiting period

The Arbitrum Foundation says the seven-day delay on withdrawals through its official bridge provides time for verifiers to submit a fraud proof against a fraudulent transaction. The Foundation’s statement is specifically about that bridge: “Whenever there are bridge transactions into the Ethereum mainnet using the official Arbitrum bridge, there is a mandatory 7-day waiting period for withdrawals and this is due to the bridge’s security measures.” Arbitrum Foundation support

Why a bridge estimate is not a universal promise

Network-specific documentation describes materially different waits and finalization processes. Do not treat a general estimate for a bridge example as a promise for an L2-to-mainnet withdrawal. Check the selected bridge’s current interface and official documentation for its expected timing and required actions.

Canonical withdrawals and faster liquidity routes

A canonical withdrawal follows the network’s documented bridge process, including any proof, challenge window, and claim or finalization step. A liquidity-provider route can make funds usable on Ethereum sooner: a provider may pay the user on L1 for a fee while taking over ownership of the pending withdrawal. Ethereum.org describes this as a liquidity-provider arrangement, not as a change to the underlying pending withdrawal’s protocol process. Ethereum.org bridge guide

Before choosing a faster route, compare the live total fee and amount received with the canonical route, and check what provider or bridge assumptions the route relies on. Ethereum.org distinguishes trusted bridge models, which rely on an operator or system, from trust-minimized designs using smart contracts and algorithms. “Trust-minimized” does not mean risk-free. Can you return to Ethereum mainnet after bridging to an L2?

Yes. You can withdraw supported assets from an L2 to Ethereum mainnet using that network’s bridge process. Ethereum.org also notes that the same bridge can be used to return to mainnet. The withdrawal is a separate L2-to-L1 transaction, so its timing, fees, token support, and completion steps depend on the selected network and route. Ethereum.org bridge guide
