To check whether an Ethereum Layer 2 still supports withdrawals, first identify the network, bridge, asset, and direction of travel. For a withdrawal already in progress, open that network’s official bridge transaction history and look up the transaction hash from the L2. Then check whether it has been initiated, proven on Ethereum, passed any required challenge or delay period, and finalized on Ethereum. A confirmed transaction on the L2 alone does not mean the funds have arrived on Ethereum.
There are two separate questions: whether the network currently offers a valid way to exit, and whether your particular withdrawal is progressing. Check the network’s current official bridge and documentation for the first; use the transaction record and bridge history for the second.
First, make sure you mean an L2 bridge withdrawal
An L2 withdrawal moves tokens from a Layer 2 network to Ethereum through a bridge. It is different from withdrawing staked ETH from an Ethereum validator: validator withdrawal credentials and exit procedures do not tell you whether an L2 bridge supports withdrawals.
Before checking, note the exact L2 network, bridge, asset, and direction of travel. A deposit from Ethereum to an L2 follows a different process from an L2-to-Ethereum withdrawal, and a third-party bridge may have a different status page or route from the network’s official bridge.

Check the status of a specific withdrawal
- Open the official bridge used for the withdrawal. Find its transaction history or status tool. Arbitrum’s official FAQ recommends checking the bridge history to see the status of a deposit or withdrawal and when a withdrawal is ready to claim: Arbitrum FAQ. Use the equivalent official interface for the network and bridge involved.
- Search for the initiating L2 transaction hash. This is the transaction that began the withdrawal on the Layer 2. Confirm that the bridge record matches your asset, amount, and destination.
- Identify the current stage. Check whether the withdrawal is awaiting initiation, an L1 proof, a challenge or execution delay, or finalization. Status labels differ by network, so use that network’s documentation to interpret them.
- Verify the relevant on-chain transaction. Follow the bridge’s links to the applicable Ethereum or L2 explorer and confirm the transaction record for the stage you are checking. A successful L2 initiation is not proof of L1 completion.
- Complete any required claim or finalization step. Some withdrawal flows require a separate Ethereum transaction after the waiting period. If the bridge says the withdrawal is ready to claim, follow the official instructions and verify the resulting L1 transaction.
What the withdrawal stages mean
Optimistic-rollup withdrawals commonly involve multiple transactions across two chains. In the OP Stack flow, the user initiates the withdrawal on the L2, proves it on Ethereum, waits through the challenge period, and then finalizes it on Ethereum. The OP Stack specification states: “Once the challenge period has passed, a relayer submits a withdrawal finalizing transaction to the OptimismPortal contract.” See the OP Stack withdrawal specification.
- Initiated on L2: The L2 transaction has started the withdrawal process. Funds may not yet be available on Ethereum.
- Proven on L1: The withdrawal proof has been submitted to Ethereum, where the next applicable wait may begin.
- Challenge or delay period: The protocol requires a waiting interval before the withdrawal can be finalized. Pending during this interval does not, by itself, mean withdrawals have stopped.
- Finalized on L1: The required finalization transaction has been completed on Ethereum. Check its record and the destination wallet balance to confirm receipt.
How long should an L2 withdrawal take?
There is no single wait time for every Layer 2. Ethereum.org describes optimistic-rollup withdrawals as subject to a challenge period of roughly seven days; that is a general description, not a guarantee for every network or transaction. Check the current documentation for the particular L2 before relying on a specific timeline. See Ethereum.org’s explanation of exiting an optimistic rollup.

Some systems use different timing rules. For example, ZKsync documentation observed around September 2026 described a three-hour minimum execution delay for supported ZKsync chains, reduced from 21 hours. Because this is chain-specific and can change, consult the current ZKsync documentation for the network you are using rather than treating that figure as a universal or guaranteed wait.
A liquidity provider may offer a faster exit for a fee. That is a separate service path from the protocol’s standard withdrawal process; check the provider’s route, costs, and risks independently.

How to tell whether a network still supports withdrawals
A single pending transaction cannot establish whether an entire network supports exits. Check the network’s current official bridge, status page, and protocol documentation for an available L2-to-Ethereum withdrawal route. If you have a transaction in progress, check its bridge history and on-chain records separately.
When comparing networks or routes, look for these details in the official instructions:

Ethereum.org describes validity-proof settlement for ZK rollups and notes that some systems allow users to submit transactions directly to a rollup contract to address censorship. Those features depend on the protocol design; do not assume that every L2 has the same forced-exit mechanism. Follow the named network’s official instructions for any exceptional route. See Ethereum.org’s discussion of ZK-rollup censorship resistance.

First determine which stage is pending and compare the elapsed time with the network’s current documented delay. If a required proof or finalization transaction has not appeared, use the official bridge guidance to identify what action is expected; do not submit a transaction using an address or procedure from an unofficial source.

Some rollups document direct L1 submission or other censorship-resistance measures, but availability and steps vary. An emergency or forced exit is not a universal feature. Use the official documentation for the exact L2 and confirm any transaction details against the relevant explorer before acting.
Do not confuse bridge withdrawals with validator withdrawals
Ethereum validator withdrawal credentials determine where staked ETH and rewards can be withdrawn. The credential prefix 0x00 does not include an execution-layer withdrawal address, while 0x01 and 0x02 do. These credentials concern staking withdrawals, not whether a user can move tokens from an L2 to Ethereum. See Ethereum.org’s validator withdrawal documentation.
