Steam Deck is the clearer choice if you want a handheld built around your Steam library: it runs SteamOS, and Valve’s Proton compatibility layer can run many Windows games. “ARM handheld,” by contrast, describes a processor architecture—not one operating system, game store, or compatibility layer—so it is not possible to give a reliable category-wide verdict. Compare specific devices and specific games rather than assuming ARM alone determines what will run or how fast.

What is the practical difference?

Steam Deck has a defined software path for Steam games. Valve identifies its system software as SteamOS 3, which is based on Arch Linux. When a Steam game does not have a native Linux build, it can run through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for Windows games. That path expands what the Deck can run, but it does not guarantee that every Windows game works. Valve’s Steam Deck specifications and Steamworks’ compatibility documentation describe this software baseline.

An ARM handheld is not a single competing platform. The label tells you the processor architecture, but not whether a particular device runs SteamOS, another operating system, a specific store or launcher, or a translation or emulation layer. The result depends on the named device and its software path to the particular game.

Can ARM handhelds play Steam games?

There is no dependable yes-or-no answer for ARM handhelds as a category. To determine whether a particular ARM model can play a Steam game, establish which operating system and launcher it supports, how it runs that title, and whether the game actually launches and plays as intended. The available model-specific evidence here does not establish those details for any ARM handheld, so it cannot support a blanket claim that ARM devices can—or cannot—play Steam games.

For an individual model, check whether access to Steam is native, provided through a compatibility layer, enabled by another tool, or limited to streaming. Then check the exact game. Those routes are not interchangeable, and a game’s availability or performance through one route does not establish that it will work through another.

Is Steam Deck better for compatibility?

Steam Deck has a more clearly documented compatibility system: Valve tests games and assigns per-title ratings intended to help users understand how they behave on the Deck. The ratings evaluate Deck-specific expectations, including support for the default 1280 × 800 or 1280 × 720 resolution, readable text, good default settings, and compatibility of the game and its middleware when using Proton. Valve also notes that compatibility information can change as the device and ratings are updated. See Valve’s Steam Deck Verified criteria.

That makes the Deck’s game-by-game status easier to assess; it does not prove that every game is compatible or that the Deck beats every ARM device. For an ARM handheld, comparable per-game evidence would need to come from that model’s own operating system, launcher, compatibility method, and tested results.

What to check in a game’s rating

  • Whether the game launches and remains playable, not just whether it appears in a library.
  • Whether any required middleware works through the relevant compatibility path.
  • Whether controls and text are usable on the handheld.
  • Whether the game meets the device’s expected resolution and default-settings experience.
  • Whether the result depends on setup changes rather than working as delivered.

Do Steam Deck Verified games work on ARM handhelds?

A Steam Deck Verified rating is a finding about the game’s experience on Steam Deck under Valve’s criteria. It is not a cross-device certification. It therefore does not establish that the same title will work on an ARM handheld, even if that device can access Steam. For the ARM model, look for a result tested on that exact device and software configuration.

Which runs games faster?

No performance winner can be established from the available like-for-like evidence. Processor architecture by itself is not a benchmark, and there is no named comparative test here showing the same games running on a Steam Deck and specific ARM handhelds under matched conditions. Claims that ARM is inherently faster or slower would go beyond the evidence.

A useful comparison requires the same game and version, resolution, graphics settings, and test method. It should also name each device and its power mode, and report the measured frame-rate result. Without those details, numbers from different games or device settings cannot answer which handheld runs a particular game faster.

Steam Deck vs. ARM handhelds at a glance

Comparison point Steam Deck ARM handhelds as a category
Software baseline SteamOS 3, based on Arch Linux; see Valve’s specifications. Not stated for the category; check the specific model’s official documentation.
Windows-game path Proton can run Windows games without native Linux builds; this is not a guarantee of universal compatibility. See Steamworks’ documentation. Not stated for the category; the operating system and compatibility method depend on the model.
Per-game status Valve publishes Deck-specific ratings that can change. See Verified criteria. Not stated for the category; look for results on the exact device.
Display and battery information Valve lists a 1280 × 800 display and estimates 2–8 hours of gameplay battery life for the model information on its specifications page. The battery figure is a manufacturer estimate, not a comparative test. Not stated for the category; compare the specifications and test conditions for each model.
Matched game-performance result Not established in a comparison with a named ARM handheld. Not established in a comparison with Steam Deck.

How to compare two specific handhelds

Before choosing between a Deck and an ARM model, build the comparison around games you actually intend to play. Use official specifications for hardware claims and device-specific test results for compatibility and performance.

  1. Name the exact devices. “Steam Deck” and an identified ARM model are useful comparison targets; an architecture category is not.
  2. Trace each game’s route. Record whether it runs natively, through Proton or another compatibility method, through emulation, or by streaming. Identify the store or launcher required.
  3. Check the exact title. Confirm launch behavior, middleware, controls, text readability, and any setup changes. For Steam Deck, consult its current per-game rating; for the other device, seek evidence from that model.
  4. Compare performance under matched conditions. Require the same game version, resolution, graphics settings, power mode, and test method before treating frame rates as comparable.
  5. Compare portability claims separately. Check each model’s display, controls, storage, size, and battery information. Keep manufacturer estimates separate from independent, like-for-like tests.
  6. Account for setup effort. Distinguish out-of-box play from a result requiring configuration, an alternate launcher, community tools, or cloud streaming.

Can Steam Deck games be played offline?

Valve says an installed game can be played while Steam Deck is offline unless that particular game requires an internet connection. That exception matters: offline availability is not guaranteed for every title. See the Steam Deck FAQ.

Can changing compatibility settings fix a Steam Deck game?

For a game that does not work as expected, Steam Support documents a per-game option to select or force a Steam Play compatibility tool. This is a troubleshooting choice, not a guaranteed fix.

  1. Open the game’s Properties.
  2. Open Compatibility.
  3. Select the option to force use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose an available tool and test the game.

Valve’s instructions are in the Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide. A changed setting may help with a particular title, but it does not establish that the game is fully compatible.
