Apple’s iPhone Duo guidance calls for a familiar, adaptable app that uses the outer display like a compact iPhone and takes advantage of the wider inner display when the content benefits from it. You can prepare with flexible layouts, safe-area-aware controls, and Xcode’s iPhone Duo simulator; validate on hardware when available.
The device-specific guidance below is Apple-specific. The general practices—adaptive layout, size classes, safe areas, and testing multiple sizes—also apply to other foldable devices, but their system behavior and APIs may differ.
How should an iPhone app adapt to a foldable display?
Keep the same features, state, and information hierarchy available as the device opens and closes. Change how much content is visible, rather than creating a separate app for each pose. Apple recommends treating the outer display as compact width and the inner display as regular width, without building a custom layout for every fold position. See Apple’s Prepare your app for iPhone Duo and Design for iPhone Duo.
Choose the layout based on the content and available space. A narrow context may call for a single navigation stack; a wider one may make a list-and-detail view or two-column layout more useful. An information-dense tab-based app might show a sidebar on the inner display. The aim is to reveal related information without making the app feel unfamiliar or interrupting a task when the device changes state.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
| Layout option | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Single stack | The task is naturally sequential or the available width is compact. | Users can continue the same task after opening the device, and navigation remains clear. |
| Split view or two columns | Related content, such as a list and its selected detail, benefits from being visible together. | The relationship between columns is clear and the wider layout improves scanning rather than merely stretching the phone UI. |
| Sidebar | A tab-based app has enough information density to benefit from persistent navigation on the wider display. | Navigation remains recognizable and controls remain reachable in both compact and wide contexts. |
These are content-driven options, not layouts to assign to a named pose. Apple’s general Layout Human Interface Guidelines recommend adapting interfaces to available space rather than assuming a particular screen size.
How to make the layout adapt to available space
Use size classes, not orientation as a shortcut
In SwiftUI, read the environment’s horizontal and vertical size classes; in UIKit, respond to the view’s trait collection. Apple describes size classes as a way to express the space available to an interface. The inner display has regular horizontal and vertical size classes, while the outer display behaves more like a standard iPhone. The inner display does not honor supported interface orientations as a basis for layout decisions. Therefore, orientation alone is not a reliable proxy for whether your app has room for another column.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Remove assumptions about fixed geometry
Use flexible constraints, layout margins, and safe-area insets rather than fixed widths or metrics tied to one screen. Audit code that assumes a single screen, fixed screen bounds, a particular corner shape, or equal insets on both sides. Apple’s Design team puts the advice plainly: “Avoid fixed widths, breakpoints, or any metrics tied to a specific screen.” Use SwiftUI or Auto Layout to make the interface adaptive, and preview multiple devices, orientations, localizations, and text sizes as described in Apple’s Layout Human Interface Guidelines.
Keep screen references tied to the right scene
On a device with two displays, a reference to the main screen is ambiguous. Prefer environment values, the trait collection, or scene bounds; when you need a screen object, access it dynamically from the window scene. Apple also points to Concentricity APIs for fitting screen corners. These changes help prevent geometry assumptions from leaking into layout logic.

Where should controls and content go?
Keep interactive foreground content inside the applicable safe area. Backgrounds such as artwork can extend beyond it when doing so does not obscure information. Do not assume the left and right insets or margins match: Apple notes they can be asymmetric, including in Split View. Standard navigation bars, toolbars, and tab bars adapt to the device; on the inner display, controls may arrange vertically along a side. Standard components also account for system UI such as the status bar and camera.
For custom edge-to-edge interfaces, Apple identifies ReservedRegion for SwiftUI and UIViewReservedRegion for UIKit in iOS 27.1 as APIs for positioning custom UI while avoiding system-provided UI. These are version-specific options, not requirements for every app. Check current Apple SDK documentation before adopting them.

Account for the center fold
When the device is partially folded, the center curve can affect interaction. Apple says system components—including sheets, alerts, menus, and toolbar buttons—nudge interactive elements away from the fold; scrollable content does not need the same avoidance. Prefer standard components where they suit the task, and inspect custom buttons and controls near the fold instead of assuming the system will reposition them.
Choose safe-area content or full-bleed backgrounds deliberately
Foreground controls and information should remain readable, reachable, and clear of system UI and device geometry. A visual background can extend behind bars, but text or controls placed there risk being obscured or harder to use. The choice is not simply whether a design looks edge-to-edge: protect interaction first, then extend non-interactive visuals where the result remains clear.

How to test an iPhone app on a foldable display
Apple’s preparation talk describes Xcode 27.1 and the iPhone Duo simulator in Device Hub. It also describes incremental screen-use behavior across the iOS 27 and iOS 27.1 SDK builds: the iOS 27 SDK improves use of the inner display, while the iOS 27.1 SDK enables edge-to-edge screen use with standard navigation and toolbar buttons arranged vertically. These version details are time-sensitive; confirm the current Xcode and SDK release information in Apple’s Prepare your app for iPhone Duo before choosing a build target.
- Open the iPhone Duo simulator. In Xcode, use Device Hub to select the iPhone Duo simulator. Build and run with the current Xcode and SDK appropriate to the experience you intend to support.
- Exercise the device states. Use the simulator controls to close, open, rotate, and partially fold the device. Verify that the same task and app state remain understandable as the available layout changes.
- Check compact and regular widths. Inspect the outer display in compact-width configurations and the inner display in regular-width configurations. Test orientation transitions, but judge layout by available space rather than orientation.
- Test Split View on both sides. Drag the app into each side of Split View. Check the asymmetric safe-area cases and confirm controls remain visible and reachable when vertical controls appear on either edge.
- Vary screen size and environment. Test the smallest and largest relevant layouts, larger text, and expanded localizations. Apple’s simulator environment documentation describes changing settings and resizing a simulated iPhone screen to arbitrary dimensions for layout and clipping checks.
- Inspect interaction-sensitive areas. Check navigation, sheets, toolbar overflow, scrollable content, custom controls, and anything near the center fold. Confirm that the content hierarchy still makes sense when the device opens and closes.
- Validate on physical hardware when available. A simulator is useful for repeatable layout checks, but device-specific behavior may require a real device to assess fully.
Apple’s engineering manager David Jackson says, “Your app will work on iPhone Duo even if you haven’t built it with the iOS 27 SDK.” That is a compatibility statement, not a guarantee that an app’s layout will make effective use of the inner display. Adaptive design and testing remain important.
Quick Recap
What to audit in an existing iPhone app
- Fixed widths, hard-coded screen bounds, and layout decisions based only on device idiom or orientation.
- Code that uses the main screen reference instead of scene-specific bounds or environment information.
- Assumptions that safe-area insets, margins, corners, or left and right edges are identical.
- Custom interactive elements near the center fold or other system UI.
- Layouts that merely stretch a narrow phone screen instead of using extra space to show related content.
- State or navigation that changes unexpectedly when the app moves between compact and regular-width contexts.
