For a smoother multiplayer race, check access and connection diagnostics first, then adjust cross-play and voice chat to fit your group. There is no universal best preset: the right choices depend on the game, platform, network, and who you want to play with.
Start with access and the game’s connection diagnostics
Before changing advanced network settings, confirm that online play is available for your game and platform, that required accounts are linked, and that any platform subscription is active. Requirements differ by game. For example, Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 requires an internet connection and PlayStation Plus for online play; its first launch also involves signing in to PlayStation and Microsoft accounts. Its online options include Horizon Open, Horizon Arcade, Horizon Tour, EventLab, The Eliminator, Hide & Seek, Festival Playlist, and Freeroam Convoys.
If the game provides network diagnostics, check them before changing settings. EA’s explanation for EA SPORTS FC describes how delays or interruptions in the round trip between a player’s device and a game data center can cause lag, visual stuttering, or disconnection. The same terms are useful when reading diagnostics in other games, but EA’s page is not a racing-game-specific standard.
- Ping is the time for data to travel to the server and back. It describes response delay.
- Packet loss means some data packets fail to complete that trip.
- Jitter describes changes in ping over time; inconsistent delay can make movement feel uneven.
These are different signals, not interchangeable measures of internet speed. There is no universal cutoff established here for a good result; use the game’s own guidance and compare readings when the problem occurs with readings when play feels stable. See EA’s connection-quality explanation.

Choose a connection path for consistency
If cars respond late, movement is inconsistent, or a session drops, inspect the diagnostics and consider whether your local connection is unstable. Advertised bandwidth alone does not describe the whole route: the home network, internet provider, route to the game service, and the service itself can each affect play.
When Wi-Fi instability is suspected, trying Ethernet is a reasonable troubleshooting step if your device supports it and you can run a cable safely. PlayStation’s voice-chat troubleshooting guidance recommends a wired connection if possible. A cable is not a guaranteed fix for latency, provider routing, or a game-service problem.

If a connection or voice-chat session drops, check whether other devices or services on the same network are also having trouble. PlayStation also advises restarting the console and network equipment as troubleshooting steps. Its instructions are platform-specific; do not treat port opening as a universal first fix. Follow the relevant platform and internet-provider guidance only when there is a known need. See PlayStation’s voice-chat troubleshooting steps.
Set cross-play around your group and matchmaking pool
Cross-play determines whether players on different platforms can join or be matched together, subject to the game’s own rules. Leave it enabled when friends use different platforms or when you want access to a broader pool. Consider disabling it only if same-platform matchmaking better suits your group or the game’s competitive or privacy options.

In F1 25, cross-play covers PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its documented menu path is Settings > Crossplay. When cross-play is disabled, players match only with others on their platform. Those details apply to F1 25; menus and platform support vary by game. See EA’s F1 25 cross-play instructions.
Separate voice-chat setup from racing connection settings
If the race remains connected but teammates cannot hear you, start with audio routing and chat controls rather than changing network settings. On PlayStation, check the selected input device, microphone level, output device, mute state, and whether party chat or game chat has priority. The exact controls differ between console generations and other platforms.

Choose party chat when your group wants to coordinate privately across activities, or game chat when you need to communicate with players in the session. Then verify that the selected microphone and output device match the way you are actually connected. PlayStation’s guidance covers device and chat troubleshooting at its voice-chat support page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Change one setting at a time and check for service issues
- Record the symptom. Note whether the issue is delayed car response, inconsistent movement, a dropped session, inability to find friends, or missing voice chat.
- Check access and diagnostics. Confirm online requirements and account linking, then inspect available in-game network indicators.
- Adjust the relevant setting. For connection symptoms, test a more stable connection path; for group access, check cross-play; for audio, check microphone and chat routing.
- Test another session. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affected the symptom.
- Check official status and support. If diagnostics look normal or multiple players report the same matchmaking trouble, consult the game’s current service-status and support channels.
Game-side trouble can affect multiplayer even when a player’s own setup has not changed. A Forza community update dated December 2, 2021, described then-reported matchmaking, connectivity, convoy, and player-disappearance problems in Forza Horizon 5. That is historical evidence, not a statement about current service status; use the game’s current channels for live incidents. See the Forza issue update.
