A digital purchase is tied to the purchasing account and its license, so a lock icon calls for troubleshooting before you assume the game is gone. Offline play is possible for downloaded digital purchases when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on that PS5; subscription games have separate membership and availability conditions.
What changes when you lose a PS5 game disc?
Installing a disc game copies its data to the console, but installation does not replace the disc as the normal check for playing that copy. Sony says to “Keep the disc inserted every time you play the game.” If the disc is lost or unusable, you lose that ordinary authorization to start the installed disc-based game. Sony’s disc-game installation guide explains the requirement.
That does not mean a disc preserves every part of a game indefinitely. The game may have online features that depend on publisher services, and Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide for CFI-71XX says “Service availability is not guaranteed” and that online features of specific games may be withdrawn on reasonable notice. A disc does not keep those services running.
Check the console and disc first
- Confirm the disc is inserted correctly and is the game you installed.
- Confirm your PS5 has a disc drive installed. Disc play requires compatible disc-drive hardware; check your exact console model before buying a separate drive.
- If the disc is present but the game will not start, use Sony’s disc-game guidance and the console’s disc troubleshooting steps.
What can block access to a digital game?
A digital purchase is associated with the account that bought it and the applicable license. If a game displays a lock icon, that alone does not establish that the purchase has been permanently lost. Sony’s game-launch troubleshooting guide recommends checking the purchasing account, transaction history, network and service status, and licenses.

Troubleshoot a locked digital purchase
- Sign in to the purchasing account. If the console is using a different account, switch to the one that bought the game.
- Check transaction history. Confirm the purchase appears on that account.
- Restore licenses. Sony includes license restoration among its checks for launch problems.
- Check PlayStation service status and network access. A connection or service issue can interfere with license checks.
- If another account bought the game, check its sharing setting. The account holder’s PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play configuration determines whether other users on that console can access eligible purchased and downloaded games.
- If the game comes through PlayStation Plus, check membership and availability. A subscription entitlement is not the same as an outright purchase.
Can you play a digital game offline?
Yes, when the relevant conditions are set up. Sony says enabling Console Sharing and Offline Play lets users of that PS5 play the account holder’s purchased and downloaded games while the console is offline. The setting can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. See Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play instructions.
To enable it, sign in to the account whose games you want to share, then open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and select Enable. The account holder must also have downloaded the game to that console. Individual games can still require an internet connection for particular features.

Sony also limits remote deactivation of all devices to once every six months. This is separate from the one-PS5-at-a-time sharing limit. If sharing is set up on another console, review Sony’s support page for the available deactivation and activation steps.
How subscription games differ from purchases
PlayStation Plus is a paid subscription service. A game accessed through a subscription or catalog benefit is not equivalent to a game bought outright: access can depend on an active membership and whether that title remains available under the benefit. For a locked subscription game, Sony directs players to check both membership status and the game’s availability. PlayStation Plus support describes the service and its benefits.

Use the transaction history and entitlement details to distinguish the cases. If you purchased the game, troubleshoot the account and license. If you accessed it through a subscription, confirm the subscription is active and the title is still included.

What neither format guarantees
Neither a disc nor a digital purchase guarantees permanent access to every game feature. Sony’s CFI-71XX quick-start guide cautions that service availability is not guaranteed and that online features for specific games may be withdrawn on reasonable notice. The cited support guidance does not settle every case involving account restrictions, publisher shutdowns, or future store availability, so those outcomes should not be inferred from the format alone.
