A PS5 game usually shows a padlock after an account or console change because the console cannot confirm the license or access permission for it. Sign in with the account that bought the game, check any PlayStation Plus requirements, confirm Console Sharing and Offline Play on the new PS5, and then restore licenses.
Why PS5 games lock after switching accounts
A digital game belongs to the PlayStation Network account that purchased it. If you switch to another account, that account may not have permission to start the game unless the purchasing account has enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play on the PS5 being used. First, sign in to the account that bought the game and check its transaction history to confirm the purchase.
If you accessed the title through PlayStation Plus rather than buying it outright, check that the subscription is active and that the game is still available through the service. Access can end if either condition is no longer met. Sony’s locked-game troubleshooting covers these entitlement checks.
Why games lock after switching PS5 consoles
Sony permits Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5 at a time. On the PS5 where the feature is enabled, other users can play the account owner’s purchased and downloaded games, including when the console is offline. If you move to a new console, the account owner must transfer this permission from the previous PS5.

- On the former PS5, sign in as the account owner and go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Disable the feature.
- On the new PS5, sign in as the same account owner and open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select the option to enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the new console.
Once enabled, other users on that PS5 can access the owner’s eligible purchased and downloaded games. Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play guide explains the one-console limit. Sony also limits remote deactivation of all devices to once every six months.
Restore PS5 game licenses
If the purchase or subscription entitlement is valid and sharing is configured correctly, restore the licenses on the PS5:

- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Select the licenses you want to restore and follow the on-screen prompts.

If the PS5 game is still locked
A padlock is not a diagnosis of one specific fault. Sony identifies license and network problems as possible causes, so work through the remaining checks before assuming the game or console is damaged.

- Check PlayStation Network status in case a service issue is preventing license confirmation.
- Install the latest PS5 system software.
- Recheck that the account signed in owns the game or qualifies through PlayStation Plus, and that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on this PS5 if another account owns it.
- If the basic checks do not help, follow Sony’s download troubleshooting steps to clear the system cache and rebuild the database in Safe Mode.
If the problem continues, contact PlayStation Support with the error code, the steps that reproduce the lock, and the date and time you tried to access the game.
