The right plan depends on whether you play on an Xbox console, a Windows PC, or both—and whether you want day-one releases, console multiplayer, cloud streaming, or bundled benefits.
How Xbox Game Pass works
You choose a plan, then play eligible games included in its catalog on the supported platform. A subscription is access, not permanent ownership: you lose access if the subscription expires or the game leaves the catalog. Xbox says titles, features, and availability vary by time, region, plan, and platform.
Xbox’s US pages, checked October 7, 2026, show the following plan features and catalog counts. The counts are undated figures displayed on live pages, not independently measured totals or figures tied to a specific publication date.
| Plan | What Xbox lists | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate | 500+ games; day-one games; cloud streaming; EA Play; Fortnite Crew; Ubisoft+ Classics; online console multiplayer; and other benefits | Xbox console, PC, and supported devices |
| Premium | 200+ games; streaming; new Xbox-published games join the library within one year of launch | Xbox console, PC, and supported devices |
| Essential | 50+ games; online console multiplayer; in-game benefits; no day-one new releases | Check the live plan comparison for current platform details |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games; day-one titles; in-game benefits; EA Play | Windows PC only |
These figures and descriptions come from Xbox’s US Game Pass overview; they can change, and availability can differ in other regions.

Which plan works on Xbox, PC, or both?
PC Game Pass is specifically for Windows PC. Xbox says it requires Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or higher, and the Xbox PC app. Each game has its own hardware requirements, and some may require a newer Windows update. Check the individual game listing rather than assuming a PC that meets the app’s requirements can run every game.
Other plans may cover console and PC, but access to a particular title still depends on its platform version and the plan’s terms. Before subscribing, compare the platform you use with the title’s listing and the current plan comparison.

What you can do with cloud gaming
Cloud gaming streams supported titles to compatible devices instead of requiring a console or gaming PC to run the game locally. Xbox lists phones and tablets, selected smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Meta VR headsets, and a browser at xbox.com/play among supported options. Device and regional support can change.
For subscription games, cloud play requires an eligible plan, a cloud-supported game, a supported region and device, and a compatible controller. A controller can connect by Bluetooth or USB; select games offer Xbox touch controls. Xbox lists a minimum download speed of 10 Mbps, while some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Its guidance recommends 10 Mbps on mobile and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs, and tablets, along with 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. Actual results also depend on your connection, location, and device.

The cloud catalog is not the full Game Pass library: Xbox says most library titles and select free-to-play games are cloud playable. Subscribers can also stream select cloud-playable games they own or buy outside Game Pass. Monthly cloud playtime limits vary by eligible plan, and cloud hours from multiple subscriptions do not stack. PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming. See Xbox’s Cloud Gaming FAQ for current eligibility and limits.

Billing, cancellation, and game access
Recurring billing is on by default. Xbox says you can turn it off through your Microsoft account or console. To avoid another renewal, review the subscription’s billing status and cancellation options in your account. Xbox’s subscription and cancellation guidance has the current steps and terms.
Xbox’s FAQ says a subscriber charged through recurring billing who cancels within 30 days may request a refund for the most recent recurring charge. The stated limit is one time per Microsoft account per subscription product; terms can change, so check the current guidance rather than assuming every cancellation qualifies.
