Choose by setup, not just player count
“Large group” can mean several different things: everyone sharing one screen, nearby consoles connecting locally, consoles linked over a wired network, or players joining online. A game’s biggest advertised number may also describe a special mode rather than a race. Use the comparison below to match the format to your gathering.

Best games by group size and activity
For one console: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
For a living room where everyone needs to play on the same system, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the clearest documented choice here: Nintendo lists offline TV and tabletop split-screen for up to four players. Plan on one compatible controller per local player, and check that you have enough controllers before the session.

If your group can bring multiple consoles and arrange a wired network, Nintendo Support documents LAN play for up to 12 players. This is a multi-console setup, not 12 people sharing one Switch screen. Nintendo separately describes local wireless for up to eight players; decide which connection method your venue and hardware can support before relying on a headcount.

For a large online race: The Crew Motorfest
Ubisoft advertises races with 28 players, making The Crew Motorfest the strongest documented pick here when the goal is a large conventional race. Its Last Crew Standing mode supports 32 players split into eight crews, but that larger number belongs to a different, team-based activity. Check the game’s current mode support for your platform before organizing around a specific mode.
For social driving and varied activities: Forza Horizon 5
Forza Horizon 5 offers online races alongside cooperative Horizon Tour, Arcade events, and player-created EventLab content. Its Hide & Seek mode is for six players. Playground Games announced cross-play across Xbox consoles, PC, and PS5, which can help bring together friends on different supported platforms. These features make it a flexible group-driving option, but the official material cited here does not verify a current maximum for a conventional race or convoy.

How many people can play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe together?
It depends on the connection method: Nintendo lists up to four players in offline split-screen on one console, up to eight in local wireless, and up to 12 in wired LAN across multiple consoles. Those are separate formats, not a single 12-player split-screen race. Nintendo also says online play requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership; check its current service terms and the game’s availability for your region and system.
What to check before you organize a group session
- Decide the format first. Confirm whether players will share one console, use local wireless, connect consoles by wired LAN, or join online.
- Match the headcount to the mode. Motorfest’s 28-player figure is for races; the 32-player figure is for Last Crew Standing. Forza’s six-player figure applies to Hide & Seek.
- Check hardware and controllers. For local Mario Kart play, confirm each player has a compatible controller. LAN play requires multiple consoles and a wired connection.
- Confirm platform and online access. Check that everyone has a supported platform and edition, and account for any required online subscription. Nintendo explicitly notes that online play requires paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Verify current mode availability. Publisher statements establish these limits for the described modes, but platform-specific support can differ; check the game’s current support information before planning around a large online lobby.
Which racing game supports the biggest group?
For a standard race, The Crew Motorfest has the largest explicitly advertised figure in the official materials cited here: 28 players. The 32-player Motorfest figure is larger, but it describes a separate crew-based mode. For groups meeting in person, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe offers the most useful documented range across distinct setups: four on one console, eight via local wireless, or up to 12 on wired LAN across consoles.
