Choose split-screen if everyone is in the same room and the game supports enough local players. Choose online multiplayer if your friends are elsewhere, or you want matchmaking, scheduled races, or private internet sessions. Before picking a game, verify its local and online modes for your exact platform: player limits, controller needs, and membership requirements vary by title.
How to choose between local and online racing

These are differences between play modes, not a guarantee that every racing game includes both. Check the current official manual and platform listing for the specific game before buying or inviting a group.
What to check before choosing a game
- Platform-specific player limit: A title can support different local player counts on different consoles.
- Controller count: Local multiplayer may require one compatible controller for each player.
- Online access: Confirm whether online play requires a platform membership, and whether your group wants public matchmaking or a private session.
- Connection quality: Online racing depends on network conditions. Gran Turismo’s guidance notes that connection quality and NAT type affect the online environment.
- Offline availability: Check which modes remain playable without an internet connection; online-focused features may not be available offline.
How the modes differ in real games
Gran Turismo 7: split-screen limits depend on console
Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 7 manual says split-screen supports up to four players on supported consoles, but up to two on PS4. Each player needs a controller. The difference makes checking the platform essential: “supports split-screen” alone does not tell you whether a particular console can accommodate your whole group.
The game’s product information lists PS5 and PS4 disc editions and also offers a digital edition. It says that offline, only Arcade Mode is available. For online competition, the product information describes global Daily Races and an annual Online Championship. Those options suit players looking for events beyond a one-off local race.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: wireless and LAN counts are different
Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions distinguish between Wireless Play and LAN Play: Wireless Play supports two to eight players, with up to two per console; LAN Play supports up to 12. These are limits for those specific modes, not a promise that one console can host eight players in split-screen.
Nintendo also lists regional, tournament, and friends options for online play, which requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Choose based on how many people will play on each console and whether your group is using online play, wireless play, or LAN.

Forza Motorsport: scheduled races or customizable private lobbies
In an August 11, 2023 article, Turn 10 Studios described Forza Motorsport Featured Multiplayer as scheduled events with practice, qualifying, and races. The article says its matchmaking uses Driver and Safety Ratings. It also describes Private Multiplayer lobbies, where hosts can customize race length, car class, track, and rules.
That makes Forza Motorsport a useful example for players who want structured competition or more control over a group race. The multiplayer information cited here does not establish a split-screen option for the current game, so do not assume it offers couch play; check the current Forza Motorsport listing for details about the version you plan to play.

Pick the mode that fits your group
- Everyone is in one room: Start with games that explicitly support local multiplayer, then confirm the platform’s player limit and controller requirements.
- Friends are remote: Look for online modes that match your plans—friends-only sessions, public matchmaking, or scheduled events—and check membership and connection requirements.
- Your group wants both: Compare each game’s local and online modes separately. A title’s support for one does not imply the same player count or features in the other.
