Test the same network with another device, then work through Windows’ built-in checks and reversible fixes before changing drivers. Use a driver package only for your exact Surface Laptop model, and treat reset or recovery as a last resort.
Identify the Wi-Fi problem
Open Settings > Network & internet and check whether Wi-Fi is on, Airplane mode is off, and your network appears. The symptom determines which steps are most useful:
- Your network is not listed: check Wi-Fi and Airplane mode, then continue to the restart and Device Manager checks if it remains missing.
- Your network appears but will not connect: test another device on that network, then run the network troubleshooter.
- The Surface says it is connected, but there is no internet: check whether other devices can browse. If only one app or website fails, the cause may be that app, site, or a firewall rather than the Surface’s Wi-Fi radio.
- Wi-Fi settings or controls are missing: check Device Manager for a disabled or missing wireless adapter.

Check whether the router or Surface is at fault
Connect a phone or another computer to the same Wi-Fi network. This quick comparison helps separate a network problem from one limited to the Surface.

- The other device also cannot connect: restart the modem and Wi-Fi router. If devices connect to Wi-Fi but none can reach the internet, contact your internet provider or the network-equipment manufacturer.
- The other device connects and browses normally: continue with the Surface-specific checks below.
These network-side checks are part of Microsoft’s Surface troubleshooting steps.
Run the Windows network troubleshooter
In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run beside Network Adapter. Follow any recommended fixes and test Wi-Fi again. Windows also provides automated network help through the Get Help app. Menu labels can vary between Windows versions; if the path differs, search Settings for “troubleshoot” or use Get Help.

Toggle Airplane mode and restart the Surface
- Turn Airplane mode on, wait briefly, then turn it off. Confirm that Wi-Fi is enabled.
- If the network is still missing or the Surface will not connect, shut it down and wait a short time.
- For the Wi-Fi-specific Surface restart sequence, hold the power button for 20 seconds, then release it and let the Surface start.
This button-hold procedure is part of Microsoft’s targeted Surface Wi-Fi guidance; it is not a required restart method for every Windows problem. See the Surface Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.
Check the wireless adapter in Device Manager
If Wi-Fi controls or networks are missing, open Device Manager > Network adapters. Look for the wireless adapter installed in your Surface. Adapter families vary across Surface generations: Microsoft lists Intel Wi-Fi 7 BE201 on newer Surface Pro and Laptop for Business generations; Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200, AX201, AX210, and AX211 on several generations; Qualcomm Wi-Fi Network Adapter on selected models; and Marvell AVASTAR Network Controller on other Surface devices. This is not a complete model-by-model mapping, so use your exact device model to identify its adapter.

- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters and locate the Surface’s wireless adapter.
- If the adapter is disabled, open its properties and use the available option to disable it, then enable it again.
- Restart the Surface and check whether Wi-Fi settings and networks return.
Microsoft’s Surface guide lists adapter families and recommends checking the adapter when Wi-Fi is unavailable. If no wireless adapter appears, proceed to the model-specific update steps rather than installing a package selected by guesswork.
Install the right Windows and Surface updates
When you have an internet connection, install available Windows updates and the Surface updates for your exact model. If Wi-Fi is down, Microsoft says you can use Ethernet, if available, or a different internet-connected PC to obtain the Surface driver package (MSI). With another PC, download the package for the exact Surface model, copy it to a USB drive, transfer it to the Surface, and run it there. Check the model carefully: Surface generations use different wireless hardware and driver packages.

Microsoft also describes uninstalling a network adapter driver and restarting Windows so it can reinstall the driver. Treat that as a later step, after the troubleshooter, restart, and adapter checks; removing the wrong driver can make recovery harder. Open the Surface app to check update status or use its Get help options. Microsoft also provides the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and other repair guidance through its Surface app and diagnostic tools page.

Reset or recovery should come after ordinary troubleshooting, not before it. Back up important files first. Microsoft says creating and using a recovery drive reinstalls Windows, deletes personal files, resets settings, and removes installed apps. Review Microsoft’s Surface reset and recovery guidance before proceeding.
If your Surface Laptop still runs Windows 10
Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. A Surface running Windows 10 continues to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Surface Wi-Fi guidance for its Windows 10 support note.
