Yes. A Samsung Galaxy phone can connect to a Chromebook using Google’s Android-phone features. Depending on the devices, software versions, and any work or school restrictions, you can sync notifications, send texts, view recent photos, transfer files, use your phone’s mobile data, and unlock the Chromebook. Some features have separate requirements, and Samsung-phone app streaming is not confirmed by Google’s general compatibility guidance.

How to connect a Samsung phone to a Chromebook

Google’s Android-phone connection guide lists ChromeOS 71 or later and Android 6 or later. Sign in to the same Google Account on both devices. You can connect during Chromebook setup by choosing the Android-phone quick setup and scanning the QR code, or pair the devices later:

  1. On the Chromebook, open Settings → Connected devices.
  2. Choose Set up beside Android phone.
  3. Confirm your choice, enter your password if prompted, and follow the on-screen steps.

Google’s separate Phone Hub guide lists ChromeOS M89 or later and Android 5.1 or later. These are requirements for different connection features, not one universal minimum: check the requirement for the feature you want. If the Chromebook is managed by work or school, an administrator may block phone connections or individual features. Google’s connection guide and Phone Hub guide explain their respective requirements.

What you can do after connecting

Use Phone Hub for phone status and controls

Open Phone Hub using the phone icon near the Chromebook’s system tray. It can show your phone’s cell signal and battery status, display Chrome tabs and recent Gallery photos or screenshots, and provide quick controls such as enabling the hotspot or locating and silencing the phone. You can choose which Phone Hub features are active in Settings → Connected devices. Google says some Phone Hub features remain available while the Chromebook is offline, although an action that needs connectivity may not work.

  3. On the device with the file, select its share action and choose Quick Share, then select the receiving device.

If both devices are signed in to the same Google Account, Google says the transfer is accepted automatically. Google notes that Nearby Share is now called Quick Share, though some devices may still display the older name. See Google’s file-sharing instructions for details.

Use the phone’s mobile data with Instant Tethering

Instant Tethering lets a Chromebook connect through your phone’s mobile network. Google lists ChromeOS 71 or later, Android 8.1 or later, the same Google Account on both devices, and a Chromebook that supports instant hotspot. Turn on Bluetooth, then select the phone from the available device hotspots. Availability and charges depend on your carrier: some carriers limit or charge for instant hotspot use, and tethering can use more phone battery. Check your carrier’s terms before relying on it. Google’s Instant Tethering guide has the requirements.

Unlock the Chromebook with Smart Lock

Smart Lock can use a nearby Android phone to unlock a Chromebook. Google’s listed requirements include an internet connection and the same Google Account on both devices, plus an unlocked phone with Bluetooth enabled and a screen lock configured. Google says Smart Lock is enabled by default after connecting; you can turn it off in the connected-device settings. Work or school policies may prevent its use. See Google’s Smart Lock instructions.

Does Phone Hub stream Samsung phone apps?

Do not assume it does. Google’s general Phone Hub guidance names Pixel 4A or later running Android 13 or later, Nothing Phone (1) and (2), and select Xiaomi models (12T, 12T Pro, 13, and 13 Pro) for app streaming. The phone and Chromebook must be close and on the same Wi-Fi network, and some networks may not work. Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook Plus instructions describe streaming apps through Phone Hub but do not list compatible phone models. The available guidance therefore does not establish that Samsung Galaxy phones support Phone Hub app streaming, even with a Galaxy Chromebook Plus. Check current documentation for your exact phone and Chromebook, or the options shown in your settings, before counting on it. This is separate from installing Android apps directly on a Chromebook.

What to check if a feature is unavailable

  • For basic pairing: Check the Android and ChromeOS versions, confirm both devices use the same Google Account, and repeat setup under Settings → Connected devices.
  • For Quick Share: Check that the Chromebook meets the ChromeOS 91 requirement, the phone meets Android 6.0, and the Chromebook’s visibility setting allows the other device to find it.
  • For Instant Tethering: Check Android 8.1 or later, Bluetooth, the same Google Account, Chromebook support, and your carrier’s hotspot terms.
  • For Smart Lock: Check that the phone is unlocked, has a screen lock, has Bluetooth enabled, and that both devices have internet access and use the same Google Account.
  • For work or school Chromebooks: Ask the administrator whether connected-phone features are permitted.

For most features, the important checks are the software requirements for that feature, whether the Chromebook supports it, carrier terms for tethering, and any administrator restrictions. App streaming additionally depends on phone-model eligibility, which the general Google guidance does not establish for Samsung phones.
