Use Samsung Smart Switch to copy supported data from your old Android phone to a Galaxy Z Fold8. You can transfer during the Fold8’s initial setup or afterward without resetting it, and choose a wireless or USB cable connection. You can also select which categories to copy; “Everything” means supported content, not a guarantee that every app’s data or sign-in state will move.
Before you start
- Charge both phones and keep them close together while they transfer.
- Keep the old phone switched on and unlocked. Install or update Smart Switch on it if prompted.
- For wireless transfer, connect both phones to the same Wi-Fi network and enable Bluetooth on the old phone when prompted. Bluetooth helps the phones find one another.
- If you prefer a cable, check that it fits the old phone’s port and supports data transfer. Samsung’s instructions do not specify one cable that works with every Android phone.
Prompts and permissions can differ depending on the old phone, its software, and its settings. Follow the instructions shown on both devices.
Transfer during the Fold8’s initial setup
- Turn on the Galaxy Z Fold8 and begin its setup.
- When asked which device to copy from, choose Galaxy or Android.
- Keep the old Android phone on and unlocked. Follow the connection instructions on the Fold8; Samsung’s Fold8 guide directs you to scan a QR code displayed on the new phone.
- Choose wireless or USB cable transfer when offered, then follow the prompts on both phones.
- Choose Everything, the limited option for calls, contacts, and messages, or Custom to select content.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before completing setup.
Samsung recommends transferring during setup. The exact screen wording may vary with device and software version. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 setup instructions show the current workflow.
Transfer after the Fold8 is set up
- On the Fold8, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Transfer data for device setup.
- Install Smart Switch if prompted, then tap Receive on this phone.
- Choose Galaxy or Android and connect the old phone using the displayed instructions, including the QR-code flow if shown.
- Select wireless or USB cable transfer when available.
- Choose Everything, the limited calls, contacts, and messages option, or Custom.
- Follow the prompts and wait for the transfer to complete.
Samsung says you can do this without resetting the Fold8. Menu names can change with software updates. See Samsung’s instructions for transferring data after initial setup.

Choose a connection and what to copy

Samsung does not publish a speed comparison, a guaranteed completion time, or a universal cable specification for these Fold8 transfers. Transfer time depends on how much data is moved. Samsung’s Fold8 transfer guide describes the available setup choices.
What may need to be restored separately
Smart Switch does not guarantee that every app’s private data, login, or authentication state will transfer. Afterward, sign in to your accounts and check important apps and files individually. Samsung says signing in to a Samsung account can restore supported Samsung services and settings; a Google Account syncs supported Google data. Cloud services may make stored files or app data available once you sign in.

Samsung Newsroom’s August 24, 2026 overview describes Smart Switch on the eighth-generation Galaxy Z series as transferring contacts, photos, videos, messages, apps, settings, and more.
