That difference in electric charge changes how they travel and what astronomers can learn from them: magnetic fields can bend cosmic rays, while neutrinos travel in straight lines through magnetic fields and can preserve clearer clues to their direction of origin. Cosmic-ray interactions can also produce neutrinos, linking the two without making them the same thing.
What are neutrinos and cosmic rays?
A neutrino is an elementary particle with no electric charge. Neutrinos are produced in processes such as radioactive decay and nuclear reactions, including reactions in stars and supernovae. They interact only rarely with matter, so many can pass through material without interacting. NASA describes neutrinos and other ways of sensing the universe.
“Cosmic rays” is the name for energetic particles arriving from space, not for one specific elementary particle. They are usually protons or nuclei of atoms, including heavier elements. Because these particles carry electric charge, they are affected by magnetic fields. NASA notes that cosmic rays can also reveal information about chemical composition and nucleosynthesis—the processes that form atomic nuclei. NASA’s overview of matter and energy in extreme environments explains this role.
How do they differ?
| Feature | Neutrinos | Cosmic rays |
|---|---|---|
| What they are | Elementary, electrically neutral particles. | Energetic charged particles, usually protons or atomic nuclei. |
| Effect of magnetic fields | Magnetic fields do not deflect them. | Magnetic fields can bend their paths, making their sources harder to trace. |
| Interaction with matter | Interactions are rare; detectors infer their presence from the particles created in an interaction. | They can be measured directly, or through secondary particles produced when they strike the atmosphere. |
| What they can reveal | Because they can escape dense environments and are not magnetically deflected, they can carry directional clues about energetic processes and sources. | Their energies and nuclear composition provide evidence about particle acceleration and the elements arriving from space. |
The contrast is useful, but not absolute: a neutrino’s direction can still be difficult to reconstruct from detector signals, and a cosmic ray’s path can be altered before it reaches Earth. Neither messenger gives astronomers a complete account of its source on its own. IceCube’s neutrino explainer discusses how neutrinos and cosmic rays are connected.

How are they connected?
Cosmic-ray accelerators can produce neutrinos. When high-energy protons collide with matter, the resulting reactions can create neutrinos. A neutrino may therefore be a byproduct of a cosmic-ray interaction, while the cosmic ray itself remains a charged proton or nucleus. This is why astronomers study the messengers together when investigating energetic environments.
That connection does not mean all cosmic rays come from one kind of object, or that the origins of all high-energy neutrinos are known. NASA’s astronomy decadal survey identifies the relationship between neutrino production, hadronic particle acceleration, and cosmic-ray origins as an important open question. How do scientists detect them?
Neutrinos: infer an interaction from its products
Neutrinos are difficult to catch because they interact so rarely. IceCube, a Cherenkov detector deployed in Antarctic ice, uses an instrumented volume of one cubic kilometer. Its optical modules register light produced when a neutrino interacts in or near that ice and creates charged secondary particles. As NASA’s IceCube mission record explains, the detector sees light from those charged particles—not a neutrino shining as it passes through.
The pattern of light can reveal different event types. For example, a muon track and a compact cascade leave different signals, helping researchers infer properties of the incoming neutrino. The rarity of neutrino interactions is why an extremely large detector volume is useful.

Cosmic rays: measure particles or atmospheric showers
Some cosmic-ray experiments measure incoming charged particles and their energies directly. Others detect the showers of secondary particles produced when a cosmic ray collides with Earth’s atmosphere. To study composition, scientists can identify the mass of nuclei in the incoming population; isotope identification helps distinguish which elements are present. NASA Goddard’s cosmic-ray guide describes cosmic rays and how their composition is studied.

On September 22, 2017, IceCube detected a high-energy neutrino event estimated at about 300 trillion electron volts. Follow-up observations found heightened gamma-ray emission from the blazar TXS 0506+056. NASA reported the result in 2018 as the first identification of an extragalactic source for a high-energy neutrino. NASA’s account of the TXS 0506+056 observations describes the association.

The finding is an example of multimessenger astronomy: researchers compared a neutrino observation with electromagnetic observations of the same region of the sky. It supports a connection between high-energy neutrinos and an energetic astrophysical source; it does not establish that blazars produce every cosmic ray or every high-energy neutrino.
