Each run puts that setup through encounters and choices, and the exact way dice and builds work varies by game.
How dice work in a dice-builder roguelite
Dice introduce uncertain results that you must turn into useful actions. In Dicey Dungeons, you roll dice and assign their values to equipment. Each piece of equipment has activation requirements, so the result of a roll matters alongside the choices you made about what to use.
Terry Cavanagh, the developer of Dicey Dungeons, describes its central interaction this way: “You explore a dungeon, you find equipment, and you use dice on that equipment to activate it.” That explains this game’s system, not a universal rule for the genre.
The game reference describes six-sided dice and character-specific mechanics. For example, the Robot calculates and rolls manually toward a target. Those details belong to Dicey Dungeons; other games may give players different ways to influence or use dice.

What a build means
Your build is the mechanical setup you assemble and adapt: the tools, abilities, or dice that work together to help you handle a run. The term describes what you are shaping, but not necessarily how you shape it.
- In Dicey Dungeons, equipment found in chests and shops combines with character-specific rules and dice to determine what actions are available.
- Circadian Dice offers a different approach: its Steam description says players build a set of dice rather than upgrade a deck.
That distinction matters. Assigning rolled results to equipment is not the same mechanic as building or customizing the dice themselves.

What happens during a run
A run is one attempt through a sequence of encounters or scenarios. Its rewards and challenges can give you opportunities to alter your setup, so a build is not always fixed from the start.
In Dicey Dungeons, players move through a randomly generated dungeon with floors, enemies, exits, rewards, and bosses. Defeating enemies can provide experience and coins; leveling up can restore health and provide rewards such as extra dice. Bonus rounds can add rules as the player advances, changing how an episode plays.

How dice, builds, and runs fit together
The game gives you uncertain dice outcomes. Your equipment, abilities, or dice configuration determines how you can turn those outcomes into actions. Encounters and rewards then test the setup and may offer ways to refine it. The recurring challenge is to adapt your build to what becomes available while managing the uncertainty in the rolls.

- Identify what you build. Is it equipment and a loadout, a set of dice, or another group of abilities?
- Check your control over the dice. Do you assign rolled results to actions, change their values, customize their faces, or use another system?
- See how the run changes. What encounters, rewards, scenarios, opponents, or mutators can reshape your setup?
Dicey Dungeons is one example of dice activating equipment, while Circadian Dice describes building a dice set. Nintendo also describes Dicey Dungeons as a deckbuilding roguelike, illustrating that genre labels can overlap rather than provide a strict definition.
Games that illustrate the idea
Dicey Dungeons
Roll dice, assign them to equipment, and use character-specific mechanics to shape your options. The game’s developer explains the equipment-and-dice interaction in his developer post. Its official site lists platforms and links to the game, but platform and store availability can change: Dicey Dungeons official site.
Circadian Dice
This is a contrasting example in which the Steam description emphasizes building a dice set rather than upgrading a deck, with scenarios featuring mutators and upgrade opportunities: Circadian Dice on Steam.
