Android phone integration on a Chromebook is a set of connected-device features, not one all-purpose phone mirror. Connect the devices through Settings → Connected devices, then choose which functions to enable. Phone Hub puts selected phone information and actions on the Chromebook; messaging, phone-assisted unlocking, and mobile-data sharing have their own controls and requirements.
What Phone Hub does
Phone Hub is the Chromebook-side panel for selected phone features. Depending on the devices and settings, it can show cellular signal and battery status, let you silence or locate the phone, and provide a shortcut to turn on its hotspot. It can also surface recent Chrome tabs, sync notifications, and give access to recent photos and screenshots from the phone’s Gallery.
Google also documents sending and receiving text messages on a Chromebook, syncing chat notifications and photos, connecting to the phone’s network, and unlocking the Chromebook with the phone. These are related connected-device capabilities, but they are not all the same feature or necessarily controlled from the Phone Hub panel.
Phone Hub can also stream selected apps from a compatible phone. That function has stricter phone, network, and permission requirements than basic connection; see Google’s Phone Hub guide for the current supported-device list.

Connect an Android phone
Google documents two setup routes. During initial Chromebook setup, a QR code can guide the connection. To connect later, use the Chromebook’s settings; Bluetooth should be on, and you’ll verify the devices and account through the prompts.
- On the Chromebook, open Settings → Connected devices.
- Next to Android phone, choose Set up and follow the prompts. Sign in or verify your identity as requested, then confirm the setup on both devices.
- Choose which connected features to enable. You can change these choices later in Settings → Connected devices → Android phone.
For the Phone Hub-specific route, Google says to open Phone Hub from the shelf or status area, choose Get started, accept, then finish setup under Settings → Connected devices → Android phone. Its dedicated guide lists ChromeOS M89 or later and Android 5.1 or later. Google’s broader connection guide lists ChromeOS 71 or later and Android 6 or later for its documented connection and feature set. These are requirements stated on different Google help pages, not a single universal minimum for every function. See the Phone Hub setup guide and Android connection guide.

How requirements differ by feature

The app-streaming compatibility list is specific to streaming, not a ranking of Android brands or a complete list of phones that can connect to a Chromebook. Check Google’s live Phone Hub guide because compatibility details can change.
App streaming: extra network and permission checks
For app streaming, enable the Chromebook’s Notifications and Apps toggles for the phone. The phone must grant the relevant permissions for notifications, photos and media, and apps. Google says some public or private Wi-Fi networks may not support streaming; Instant Tethering can place the devices on the same local network when the existing one does not support it. Streaming can also behave unexpectedly with entertainment apps whose DRM policies restrict it.

Smart Lock: unlocking with the phone nearby
Smart Lock uses the connected, unlocked phone to help unlock the Chromebook. It is separate from simply seeing phone information in Phone Hub. Google’s conditions include an internet-connected Chromebook and the same Google Account on both devices, as well as Bluetooth and a configured screen lock on the phone. To switch it off, open Settings → Connected devices → Android phone. Details are in Google’s Smart Lock instructions.
Instant Tethering: using the phone’s data connection
Instant Tethering shares the phone’s mobile data with a compatible Chromebook; it is not the same as connecting both devices to ordinary Wi-Fi. Eligibility depends on ChromeOS and Android versions, the same Google Account, and Chromebook support for Instant Hotspot. Your mobile carrier may restrict hotspot use or charge extra. Google’s phone-network instructions describe the setup and conditions.

Controls, privacy, and managed Chromebooks
Use Settings → Connected devices → Android phone to adjust the connected features. You can switch Phone Hub or individual options off rather than disconnecting the phone altogether. App streaming requires the specific phone permissions described above; grant only what you want the feature to use.
Work- or school-managed Chromebooks may have policies that prevent phone connection or restrict particular features. If the settings are unavailable or connection is blocked on a managed device, an administrator may need to allow it.

Does phone integration work offline?
Google’s Phone Hub help page says: “You can still use these features when your Chromebook is offline.” That statement applies to Phone Hub features described there, not every connected-phone function or every setup. For example, Google’s app-streaming instructions call for the phone and Chromebook to share a supported Wi-Fi network, Smart Lock’s instructions require Chromebook internet access, and Instant Tethering uses the phone’s mobile data.
If the phone will not connect
- Remove an old Bluetooth pairing from both devices, then make sure Bluetooth is enabled on each.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and back on on the phone, then restart the Chromebook.
- Confirm both devices use the same Google Account and that the phone and Google Play services are updated.
- If it is a managed work or school Chromebook, check with the administrator about device policies.
