It detects neutrinos indirectly: when one of these elusive particles interacts in or near the ice, the charged particles produced can emit faint light. Thousands of sensors record that light, and researchers use its timing and pattern to estimate what happened.
What is the IceCube Neutrino Observatory?
IceCube is a scientific instrument built into roughly one cubic kilometer of natural ice near the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. It is not a conventional telescope with a lens. Its main in-ice detector consists of 5,160 digital optical modules (DOMs) mounted on 86 vertical strings. The strings extend through boreholes from about 1,450 to 2,450 meters below the surface. Each DOM contains a ten-inch photomultiplier tube and electronics that detect and record light (IceCube detector overview).
The detector was completed in December 2010 after seven austral summers of construction. Teams used hot-water drilling to make boreholes as deep as 2,450 meters, lowered in the sensors, and allowed the holes to refreeze around them (IceCube detector overview).
How does IceCube detect neutrinos?
Neutrinos have no electric charge and interact only rarely with matter. Most pass through Earth and the detector without leaving a signal. IceCube’s enormous target volume increases the chance that one will interact in or near the instrumented ice. The observatory does not photograph or directly sense a neutrino; it measures light from charged particles created by a rare interaction.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- A neutrino interacts. It may collide with a proton or neutron in the ice, producing charged secondary particles.
- Those particles emit Cherenkov light. If a charged particle moves faster than light travels through ice, it produces a faint cone of light. It does not travel faster than light in a vacuum.
- DOMs detect the light. Nearby modules record the light’s arrival time and signal information.
- Researchers reconstruct the event. Computing systems combine the recorded signals. Their pattern and timing help estimate the event’s direction and energy (IceCube detector overview; IceCube FAQ).
The light is faint, so the array’s scale and the sensors’ distribution matter: a useful event is inferred from the signals across multiple DOMs, not from a single sensor acting like a camera.
Why is IceCube buried in Antarctic ice?
Deep Antarctic ice provides both a vast detection medium and a naturally dark environment. Pressure has compressed air bubbles out of the lower ice layers, making the ice optically clear enough for Cherenkov light to travel between sensors. The overlying ice also shields the deep array from natural radiation at the surface (IceCube FAQ).

| Component | What it measures or enables | Configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Main in-ice array | Detects light from particle interactions and supports high-energy neutrino studies. | 5,160 DOMs on 86 strings, spanning about one cubic kilometer; standard strings carry 60 DOMs each. |
| DeepCore | Enables lower-energy neutrino studies, with a stated threshold of about 10 GeV. | Eight central strings with tighter horizontal and vertical spacing. |
| IceTop | Samples cosmic-ray air showers and supports veto and calibration functions. | 81 surface stations; each has two tanks, each tank with two downward-facing DOMs. |
IceTop’s surface measurements can be combined with muons detected in the deep array to study cosmic-ray energy, composition, and particle interactions. DeepCore’s denser sensor spacing helps researchers study atmospheric neutrino oscillations at lower energies than the main array (IceCube detector overview; IceCube research highlights).
What does IceCube study?
IceCube’s science program includes high-energy neutrino astronomy, neutrino properties, and cosmic-ray physics. Neutrinos can escape regions where light is absorbed or redirected, so they offer a complementary way to investigate extreme cosmic environments. The observatory’s targets include exploding stars, gamma-ray bursts, and phenomena involving black holes and neutron stars. It also supports research into dark matter questions (IceCube science overview).

A notable multimessenger result was the association of a high-energy neutrino alert with the blazar TXS 0506+056, described by IceCube as an important likely-source connection. That does not mean every detected neutrino can be matched to an identified astronomical source; many events do not have a known source (IceCube research highlights).

IceCube’s Quick Facts page reports that the observatory collects one terabyte of unfiltered data daily and sends about 100 gigabytes over satellite for analysis; the page does not give a separate publication year for those figures (IceCube Quick Facts). The collaboration comprised about 450 scientists at 58 institutions in 14 countries as of January 2025 (IceCube Quick Facts).
What is changing with the IceCube Upgrade?
In a February 2026 announcement, IceCube said the Upgrade had deployed new sensor designs, including the multi-PMT DOM (mDOM) and D-Egg. The project describes those sensors as having two to three times the sensitivity of sensors in the current detector. This is a comparison of the Upgrade designs with current-detector sensors; it does not change the established detector’s baseline count of 5,160 in-ice DOMs. Deployment and project status can change over time (IceCube February 2026 Upgrade announcement).
“The successful deployment of the IceCube Upgrade project is a feat of U.S. engineering that demonstrates significant logistical capabilities in Antarctica.”
