Remove sunglasses or face coverings, improve the lighting, hold the phone upright about 40 cm from your face, and clean the top of the screen. Re-enroll your face only if the simpler checks fail or your appearance has changed significantly.
1. Confirm your Pixel supports Face Unlock and it is set up
Google’s current Pixel Help page lists Face Unlock for Pixel 7 and later, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. Device support and menu labels can change, so check your model and software version against Google’s supported-device and setup guidance.
Open Settings and look under Security & privacy and Device unlock for Face settings. Confirm that a face is enrolled and that unlocking with Face Unlock is enabled. If the menu offers Add face, setup is incomplete. The exact path may vary by software version.
2. If Face Unlock does not activate or scan
Activation and recognition are separate problems: the phone must wake and start scanning before it can recognize an enrolled face.

- Tap the screen to wake it and look for an animation or ring around the camera.
- If Face Unlock does not start scanning, check that Tap to check phone and Lift to check phone are on. Find these options in Settings; their location can vary by software version.
- Wake the phone again and check whether the scan animation appears.

3. If the phone scans but does not recognize your face
Remove obstacles and adjust the lighting
Take off sunglasses and remove any face covering, then try again. Google notes: “When there isn’t sufficient light or when you have a face covering or sunglasses, Face Unlock might not work.” Move somewhere with adequate light; if bright direct sunlight is falling on your face, try shade instead. Hold the phone in a consistent position
Hold the phone vertically, directly in front of your face, at about 40 cm away. This is Google’s practical positioning instruction, not a guaranteed recognition distance.
Clean the top of the screen
Wipe the top of the screen with a soft, dry cloth, as Google recommends. You do not need a specialty cleaner or product for this step. See Google’s cleaning guidance.

4. Re-enroll your face after a significant appearance change
If your appearance has changed significantly, delete the existing face model before setting up a new one. In Settings, return to Face settings, remove the saved face, and choose Add face. Follow the on-screen instructions in a familiar place where you normally use the phone, with a typical appearance. For example, if you usually wear glasses or a headscarf, enroll while wearing them. Google’s setup instructions explain the face enrollment process.
5. Use your PIN, pattern, or password when Face Unlock fails
Swipe up and enter the device’s PIN, pattern, or password if face recognition still fails. Google says the phone may decline Face Unlock in some situations for additional security; a fallback unlock method is part of normal use, not proof that the camera is broken. Face Unlock privacy and security
Google says the face model is stored securely on the device, processing happens on the device, and the model is used for Face Unlock rather than shared with other Google services or apps. Google also cautions that Face Unlock may be less secure than a strong PIN, pattern, or password: someone who looks very similar, such as an identical sibling, might unlock the phone, and another person may be able to unlock it if the phone is held up to the owner’s face. Keep the device in a safe place, and use Google’s documented lockdown option when you need to disable face recognition temporarily. Details are in Google’s privacy and security information.
