For an AI-agent project whose requirements are all Python packages, uv is a natural fit: it manages project dependencies, environments, Python versions, workspaces, and lockfiles. Choose conda when the environment also needs non-Python packages, system libraries, or deliberate control over binary compatibility. The deciding factor is the project’s dependency tree—not the fact that it uses an AI agent.
What separates conda from uv?
The key difference is scope. uv is built around Python projects, while conda can manage Python together with non-Python packages and system-level libraries in an environment. Conda’s documentation describes its environments as lower-level than Python-only virtual environments: “Conda has its own notion of virtual environments that is lower-level (Python itself is a dependency provided in conda environments).” (Conda environments documentation.)
That broader scope can matter when a project depends on compiled components, external executables, or binary builds that vary across operating systems. If its requirements are Python packages that fit normal project metadata, uv’s project workflow may be simpler to organize. Neither tool is required by AI-agent frameworks as a category; check the specific framework and its dependencies.
Which should you choose for an AI-agent project?
| Decision | uv is a natural fit when… | Conda is a natural fit when… |
|---|---|---|
| Dependency scope | Agent and development requirements are Python packages that fit project metadata. | You need Python alongside non-Python packages or system libraries. |
| Project organization | You want project metadata, optional or development dependency groups, or a workspace with a shared lockfile. | You want an environment to track packages from multiple ecosystems or channels. |
| Python and platform control | You want uv to install or manage Python versions and use markers for platform-specific packages. | You need binary dependency control and the required conda packages are available for your target platforms. |
| Reproducibility | You want a project lockfile, a sync workflow, and lockfile export formats. | You want exact package, version, build, and channel records, and can confirm package availability on each target platform. |
| Team workflow | Your team already uses Python project metadata and can standardize on uv commands. | Your team already relies on conda environments or channels for its stack. |
Before settling on either tool, inspect the actual dependencies and identify the operating systems and Python versions the project must support. Frameworks and plugins may bring in packages with platform-specific or compiled requirements, so “Python project” does not automatically mean every dependency is portable.

How uv organizes Python project dependencies
uv records project dependencies in pyproject.toml. Its project model supports regular dependencies, optional dependencies, development dependency groups, and workspace members; environment markers can scope dependencies to a platform or Python version. That can help keep an agent’s runtime requirements separate from tools used only during development. See the uv dependencies documentation and uv project documentation.
uv also manages project environments and Python versions, and supports workspaces for related packages that share a project workflow. For a project made up of an agent application and several internal Python packages, workspace members can keep that code organized together. These capabilities are useful for local development, but they do not guarantee that every dependency supports every platform or Python release.

How lockfiles and syncing differ
uv: lock the Python project, then sync it
uv maintains a project lockfile and uses uv sync to bring the environment into line with it. New package releases do not automatically make the lockfile outdated; updating dependencies requires an explicit upgrade action. By default, uv sync performs an exact sync, which can remove packages installed manually if they are absent from the lockfile. uv run, by contrast, uses inexact syncing by default. This distinction matters if someone adds a package directly to the environment instead of recording it in project metadata. See uv’s lockfile and sync documentation.
uv can export its lockfile to formats including requirements.txt, pylock.toml, and CycloneDX SBOM. Export can help when another tool or workflow needs a supported interchange format, but it does not turn platform-dependent packages into universally compatible ones.

Conda: record packages, builds, and channels
Conda’s documented lockfile support for multiple platforms is available in conda 26.5 and later. Its conda-lock.yaml and pixi.lock workflows can record exact packages, versions, builds, and channels for target platforms. Exact recreation remains subject to those packages being available for the platform. Conda also documents conda export for sharing environments in formats such as YAML, JSON, explicit specifications, and requirements-style output. Its guidance distinguishes cross-platform sharing from explicit same-platform reproduction. See conda export documentation.
In either tool, a lockfile improves consistency by recording resolved dependencies; it does not make incompatible binaries interchangeable or guarantee that all packages exist for every operating system. A team should verify its target platforms and Python versions against the dependency releases it intends to use.

A practical way to decide
- List the project’s requirements. Include the agent framework, model or API clients, development tools, compiled extensions, external executables, and any system libraries.
- Check the supported matrix. Note the operating systems and Python versions contributors, CI, and deployment environments need to run.
- Choose for the widest requirement. If everything fits Python project metadata, uv is a straightforward candidate. If the environment must also provide non-Python packages or control binary dependencies, conda’s broader model may be appropriate.
- Test installation on each target. Confirm that the required packages and builds resolve for the intended platforms; do not assume a lockfile alone ensures availability.
- Standardize the team workflow. Commit the relevant project metadata and lockfile, and document the commands contributors should use so that environment changes are deliberate.
Is uv faster than conda?
The official documentation reviewed here does not establish a fair, dated conda-versus-uv performance comparison. A performance claim about uv relative to pip would not answer that comparison. Choose based on dependency scope, platform needs, reproducibility, and the workflow your team can maintain rather than assuming one is universally faster.
